About UsThe School of Life Course & Population Sciences is one of five Schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s College London. The School unites over 400 experts in women and children’s health, nutritional sciences, population health and the molecular genetics of human disease. Our research links the causes of common health problems to life’s landmark stages, treating life, disease and healthcare as a continuum. We are interdisciplinary by nature and this innovative approach works: 91 per cent of our research submitted to the Subjects Allied to Medicine (Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences and Women’s Health cluster) for REF was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We use this expertise to teach the next generation of health professionals and research scientists. Based across King’s Denmark Hill, Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Waterloo campuses, our academic programme of teaching, research and clinical practice is embedded across five Departments:

The is headed by Professor Ingrid Wolfe. Central to all we do is the concept of the life course of health. The physical and mental health of the next generation begins at the earliest stages, so our research spans preconception, maternity, infancy and adolescence.We combine more than 100 experts in obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology with specialists in a range of paediatric disorders. We deliver multidisciplinary teaching to King’s undergraduate and postgraduate students and dedicated training to healthcare professionals.Our clinicians and scientists work across the UK and internationally to better understand the causes of women’s and children’s diseases. We advise governments, improve the delivery and management of health services and develop new diagnostic techniques.We proposed the ‘continuity of carer’ model of maternity care now adopted by the UK government, showed that peanut allergy can be minimised by regular consumption in early life and invented the CRADLE device: an accurate and cheap way to monitor vital signs during pregnancy which could save as many as 70,000 lives every year.The department’s research group include:

Directorate of Women’s Services GSTTThe Directorate of Women’s Services comprises the clinical departments of Maternity (including obstetrics) and Gynaecology at GSTT and the academic department of Women’s Health at King’s College London. St Thomas’s Hospital hosts the largest single site maternity service in London. The maternity unit includes a midwife led birth unit co-located to a Hospital Birth centre. A 19 bedded antenatal ward and a 38-bed postnatal ward. The Trust delivers 6500 women annually, with a 3% homebirth rate. The birth centres are supported by the busiest maternity day assessment unit in London, a 3 bed obstetric high dependency unit and a busy Women’s ultrasound and Fetal Medicine Unit.Gynaecology outpatient care (including minor procedures and colposcopy) is all on the Guy’s site in a purpose- built unit. Gynaecology inpatients are on the St Thomas’ site within a 27-bed ward and both day and inpatient surgery. Our busy Emergency Gynaecology and Pregnancy Unit has been newly refurbished and accommodates
1000 visits per month. They support the Emergency Department on the St Thomas’ site, and it includes a dedicated hyperemesis outpatient treatment facility.The department has a known record for strong working relationships between all groups of staff and an ethos of multi-professional collaboration. There is consultant led obstetric presence on the Hospital Birth Centre for over 98 hours per week with prospective cover, and 68 hours per week of consultant delivered service across antenatal and postnatal pathways. The entire unit works to a common set of multi-professional guidelines with an ethos that each member of the team provides patient care which is of equal value to the woman although delivered through different skill sets.The Women’s Health DirectorateThe strengths of this multi-disciplinary grouping are as follows:

• The trust has been demonstrating consistently for the last 3 years that they have achieved all of the ten safety actions required to meet NHS Resolution criteria for the CNST maternity incentive fund
• Women’s Services constitutes 32% of the Trust’s in-patient and day case surgery. One of our strengths is outpatient procedures and one-stop clinics
• One of the largest clinical services in GSTFT
• Excellence of the MBBS Reproductive and Sexual Health teaching programme
• BSc programme in Intercalated Physiology (Maternal and Fetal Health)
• MSc programme in Medical Ultrasound
• Clinical Research Facilities at all hospital sites (Guy’s, St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital)
• IVF, preimplantation genetics and GMP stem cell facility at Guy’s Hospital

About the roleThe post is to build capacity for research and education within the Department of Women and Children’s Health under the School of Life Course and Population Health Sciences.The post-holder will have a background in hypertension and/or maternal medicine, one of the Department’s strategic research areas, and be expected to realise the potential for integrated research activity across the wider School. The post holder will have an excellent track record in research; a proven ability to attract external funding to support their research programme, and a good record of publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. Whilst primarily a career research focussed post, the post-holder will contribute to other relevant teaching within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. Experience of teaching at a relevant level and in an area related to Women and Children’s Health is therefore desirable. The post will be predominantly based at St Thomas’ Hospital and will include clinical activities in obstetrics. Teaching activities will be mainly across KCL’s Guy’s and Waterloo Campuses but could also be at other sites.The post-holder will join Prof. Chappell’s research group in Women’s Health Academic Unit based in Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, part of King’s College London as well as the service of Women’s Health under the leadership of Professor Eugene Oteng-Ntim at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust.This is a full-time post (40 hours per week) and will be offered until 15 September 2027.About YouTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:Essential criteria * Full GMC / NMC / other relevant body registration with valid license to practice

• PhD (or equivalent) in area related to Women and Children’s Health, or related area
• Eligible to work as a Consultant Obstetrician in the UK
• Evidence of ability to write competitive, peer-reviewed grant applications
• Publication of high impact research papers
• Supervisory/leadership experience in an area of research relevant to the Dept. of Women and Children’s Health
• Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team and to share and encourage good teaching and research practice
• Evidence of actively promoting a positive research culture
• Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias

Desirable criteria * University teaching qualification

• Evidence of external recognition of expertise (e.g. grant/paper reviewing, invitation to speak at conferences)
• Mentoring of junior staff in early career development
• Experience of university administrative duties
