This position is a part of the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP).This position is a full time (1.0 FTE) tenure track (contingent) position, comprising approximately 40% time for clinical service and 60% time for academic pursuits divided between 50% research and 10% teaching (negotiable).The successful applicant will join the IHOPE (Immunology, Hematology, Oncology and Palliative care) division which includes pediatric palliative medicine physicians as well as multiple others including pediatric hematologists, oncologists, immunologists and basic scientists. We have an active basic and clinical science program, with collaborations locally, nationally and internationally. Contributions to education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels are expected from all faculty.The clinical team, called the Pediatric Aid for Symptoms and Serious Illness Support Team (Peds ASSIST) Team, currently has 4 physicians, 3 nurses, a Clinical Nurse specialist, psychologist and social worker, with additional access to spiritual care. ASSIST provides interdisciplinary care to infants, children, adolescents, and select young adults with serious illness and their families within the Stollery Children’s Hospital, and within the broader Northern Alberta zone, both in hospital and at home. The team also provides Perinatal Palliative Care consultations at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The successful candidate will be an active member physician member of the Peds ASSIST team.The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently initiate, conduct, and manage a research program. Clinician-scientists are expected to devote 50-75% of their time to research. They are also expected to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research. The successful candidate will have access to research infrastructure available through the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute of the University of Alberta. In addition, the successful candidate would also be actively involved in scholarly activities in Pediatric Palliative Medicine, including formal teaching to medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students, clinical supervision of learners, supervision of graduate and other students in research, and involvement in academic and administrative committees.Academic members of the Department of Pediatrics are eligible to become members of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) which supports research excellence dedicated to improving the health of children and women. WCHRI is a partnership between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, with core funding support from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Women’s Health Foundation. WCHRI is the only research institute in Canada and one of the few in the world to focus on women’s, children’s and perinatal health. Thanks to our funders’ generosity, WCHRI is able to provide a broad range of support to research programs, including access to funding opportunities and research support services (e.g. biostatistics, qualitative design, KT, data management, clinical trials support, grant application development). WCHRI also invests in the next generation of researchers through graduate and summer studentships, postdoctoral fellowships and funding for trainee travel /presentation of research outcomes.As we build our team, the Department of Pediatrics recognizes that our people are and will continue to be our greatest strength.   • MD degree (or equivalent)
  • Completed subspecialty training in Pediatrics and have experience in pediatric palliative care
  • Have a minimum of 4 years of dedicated research training (masters or PhD required)
  • A proven record of high-quality research achievements as evidenced by peer-reviewed funding and high impact publications is required
  • Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and hold appropriate liability coverage
