Job description

This is a really exciting time to join the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) as we are an
independent coastal state, we are embedding new repatriated functions and services with an
increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment. The MMO licenses,
regulates and plans marine activities in the seas around England so that they are carried out
in a sustainable way.

In April 2014 the Secretary of State adopted the first ever marine plans for the East Inshore
and Offshore marine plan areas. Marine plans for the South Inshore and Offshore marine plan
areas followed in 2018. In June 2021 the Government adopted and published the North East, North
West, South East and South West Marine Plans. The decision has been taken to replace the East
Marine Plan, with work already underway.

Marine plans guide developers, planning authorities and other decision-makers so that their
activities happen in a sustainable and coordinated way. Reporting to Higher Executive Officer
(HEO), the post holders will contribute to the production, implementation and monitoring of
marine plans for England.

This advertisement is for 2 roles, one 12-month fixed term appointment (FTA) based in the North
East of England and one permanent appointment based in the South of England. As a marine
planner, the incumbents will be at the heart of policy development, engaging with local and
national stakeholders and working closely with other internal teams and external organisations.
They will deliver marine planning tasks as directed by the Marine Planner HEO, working across
marine planning functions. Work will be directed by the marine planning team.

The Marine Planner (North East) post will be based in the MMO’s Newcastle, North Shields, or
Scarborough office. The Marine Planner (South) post will be based in the MMO’s Shoreham or
Hastings office. Other suitable locations may be considered. In both roles, there will be an
expectation to travel to attend meetings on a regular basis, under normal circumstances. A
driving licence is highly desirable for this role.

The post holders will apply an in-depth understanding of preparing, implementing and monitoring
marine plans, undertaking engagement with decision-makers, applicants and other stakeholders.
You will represent marine planning effectively, supporting the development and delivery of
marine plans with stakeholders, forming and maintaining positive and productive relationships
that promote dialogue which is essential for marine plan development, implementation and
monitoring. This will contribute to effective use of marine plans and enable plan-led
management across England’s marine area.
