The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) supports Kazakhstan to meet its commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Paris Agreement. By supporting the goals and targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework, UNDP helps expand the “green economy” to create new opportunities for jobs and businesses and collaborates with other UN agencies to offer technical expertise, translating strategies into actionable plans. UNDP also establishes a monitoring framework for climate change adaptation and mitigation and develops comprehensive strategies for transitioning to green energy, sustainable land management, climate-resilient agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and reforestation.
The UNDP Biodiversity Portfolio aims strengthen biodiversity conservation in Kazakhstan by supporting a range of projects that preserve natural habitats, protect endangered species, and promote sustainable land and resource management. These projects often involve local communities, civil society though small grants and encourage sustainable development practices that align with global biodiversity and climate change goals.
Communication Analyst will support both the Biodiversity portfolio and Small Grants Programme. The Communication Analyst will be responsible for performing a set of functions outlined below in a timely and quality manner. This will include a contribution to the implementation of the work plans, preparing reports, interaction with other team members in the projects and the Country Office, as well as engaging with external counterparts.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The Communication Analyst supporting the Biodiversity portfolio and Small Grants Programme will closely work with topics essential for combatting climate change and land degradation, and advancing biodiversity conservation, such as capacity building, climate change and biodiversity, communication, education, public awareness, finance and digitalization in biodiversity, ecosystem approach, gender inclusion, and tourism.
Implementation of external communications and advocacy strategies:
- Developing strategic communication initiatives by identifying and strategizing topics for elevation, undertaking desk research on public agenda issues, identifying target audiences for specific communication actions, and preparing portfolio’s communication action plans;
- Implementing communication activities to publicize priority issues and/or major events, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome;
- Monitoring the public agenda and advising management on appropriate action/responses;
- Undertaking activities to promote media coverage of priority issues and key events in various formats and responding to media inquiries;
- Producing multimedia content as well as of information and advocacy products (e.g., multimedia stories, feature articles, data stories, press kits, press releases, media lines for interviews, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, etc.), promoting and disseminating corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications such as Annual Report, Human Development Report, etc.;
- Reviewing reference materials, coordinating design approval and distribution of communication assets, maintain an information and photo/video library, etc., кeplenishment of the UNDP photo base with high-quality photographs as part of the work of biodiversity projects;
- Coordinating communication activities with the SGP strategic partner and the global team.
Supervision of the design and maintenance of the UNDP, and SGP global and local websites, CO web-based knowledge management system:
- Contributing to the CO web site content;
- Contributing to social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X ), engaging with UNDP’s social media audience, and responding to online queries.
Elaboration and implementation of publications’ strategies and plans:
- Effectively contributing to implementation of the portfolio publications’ strategy and plan;
- Providing and managing inputs based on the UNDP publications policy;
- Providing technical supervision of translation/adaptation/rewriting of information received, printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials.
Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing:
- Awareness-raising and implementation of communication activities according to the communication plans of the projects;
- Identifying and utilizing the best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities;
- Contributing to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories;
- Providing trainings for project personnel on communications and advocacy for further development; organizing and conducting training and workshops for partners as appropriate.
Support to administrative and organizational activities, related to implementation of the CO communications and advocacy activities:
- Developing and providing feedback for terms of reference for the communications activities of the projects;
- Preparation of technical specifications for the development and purchase of branded products: backpacks, T-shirts, canvas bags, removable disks (flash drives), etc.;
- Getting approval of the design of the branded products from the Communications unit;
- Reviewing and launching of the printed knowledge products and brochures of the projects prepared for publication;
- Provide communication support for the projects’ events by coordinating with media outlets to highlight the projects’ visibility and achievements as well as by creating a consistent and appealing visual theme for the event venue;
- Providing inputs to the annual communications budget;
- Collecting and providing all the information needed for the SGP PIR in the communications and KM sections;
- Initiating and following up on administrative and procurement processes, payments, related to the execution of the communications and advocacy activities of the portfolio projects.
Institutional Arrangement
- The Communication Analyst develops and implements communications strategies related to the Biodiversity portfolio and for the SGP, implements and updates strategies as necessary, in line with the related UNDP strategies and plans under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the UNDP Kazakhstan Communications Specialist, and matrix supervision of the Biodiversity Portfolio Coordinator and the SGP Project Manager, with inputs from the UNDP Country Office team in Kazakhstan.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications or other related fields is required.
- Bachelor´s degree in the areas mentioned above in combination with additional 2 years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of Master´s degree.
Experience:
- Up to 2 years (with Master´s degree) or minimum 2 years (with Bachelor’s degree) of professional experience in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism at national or international levels.
Languages:
- Fluency in English, Russian and Kazakh is required.
Required skills:
- Demonstrated experience in communications, advocacy, and strategic communications in NGO´s or international organizations;
- Demonstrated experience in copywriting.
- Experienced in providing communications support to high-profile events, writing media materials, and developing multimedia content on various development topics.
- Relevant experience working with UN or other international organizations is an asset.
Desired skills:
- Extensive experience in social media management and social media analytics will be an asset.
- Experience working in/with local and international journalism will be an asset.
- Proven experience in speechwriting will be an asset.
