The UNDP CO in Guinea-Bissau is the lead partner providing support to the Government in the areas of justice, public administration, development planning and environment sectors, as well as in support to parliament. Key programme focus based on the current cycle are: a) Governance: constitutional review, rule of law and local governance structures and empowering women, youth and civil society. b) Promoting inclusive economic growth: poverty reduction, decent work, food security, and the structural transformation of the economy through economic diversification, agricultural technology and value chain development and market support systems. c) Climate change adaptation, disaster risk management and mitigation, preservation, and development of biodiversity.

Duties and Responsibilities

a. Support the development of engaging communication content
  • Work with the Communications Officer to develop engaging and informative blogs, feature articles, impact/human interest stories and social media posts on UNDP programmes in Guinea Bissau.
  • Support the research, writing, translation, design and production of communication assets, such press releases, reports and publications, and dissemination to UNDP country and regional offices, partners, stakeholders and the mainstream media.
  • Work with the Communication Officer to boost the social media and online presence of UNDP Guinea Bissau CO programmes through engaging written and audio-visual content.
  • Maintain regular coverage of programme-related activities on the of the UNDP GB CO website and other online platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Provide technical support to UNDP Guinea Bissau country teams in the development and appropriate use of communication and advocacy tools (i.e. newsletter, websites, posters, brochures, pamphlets) to increase visibility of the UNDP Guinea Bissau Country office Programme.
  • Support UNDP Guinea Bissau country office maintain visibility.
  • Support the development and implementation of programme-based communication and information strategies Identify subjects/stories of interest pertaining to the programmes’ efforts at the country/regional/community level to develop communications products, such as feature stories, press releases, videos and social media posts Work with the Communications Officer to conceptualize, draft and develop innovative visual assets such as infographics, animations and video clips with colleagues, vendors and partners
  • Support programme-related knowledge building, management and sharing activities for both external and internal audiences
  • Assist in organizing events, webinars, launches of publications, seminars, conferences and global campaigns.
  • Contribute to the creation of content for specific stakeholders, including presentation decks, photos videos, programme briefs, webinar/event cards, literature

Institutional Arrangement:

Working under the UNDP Guinea Bissau Governance programme that currently comprises the Japan funded TAG (Transparency and Accountability in Governance) project, the Communications Assistant will be reporting directly to the Communications Officer. The incumbent is expected to provide support with internal and external communications, knowledge management and event organizing.

  • Ability to represent and promote the UNDP brand in virtual communities and networks

  • Ability to plan, manage and execute of public and private events to ensure that they support and amplify individual communications and advocacy initiatives, as well as UNDP’s overall brand and mandate.

Communications – Graphic Design

  • Ability to communicate virtually and create appealing UNDP graphic products

Communications – Media Relations

  • Ability to develop media relations across all aspects of media work including relationship with media and preparing media materials such as messages.

Communications – Photo Production

  • Ability to create, edit, organize and coordinate photographic material
Required Skills and Experience

Education:
Completion of Secondary Education. University Degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Sciences or related field would be desirable, but it is not a requirement.
Experience:
  • 6 years of experience in a similar line of work with secondary education; and/or 3 years of experience in a similar line of work with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in developing informative blogs, feature articles, impact/human interest stories and social media posts.
  • Experience in research, writing, design and production of communication assets, such press releases, reports and publications.
  • Experience in organizing events, webinars, launches of publications, seminars, conferences and global campaigns.
  • Ability to creatively communicate concepts in an engaging and simple way.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Portuguese is required (written and verbal). Excellent command of French would be an asset.
