THE ROLE
WFP Palestine Communication teams have been providing support in the development of communication strategy, implementation of a communication plans, creation of communication materials, support with advocacy with key stakeholders, and identifying opportunities to position WFP with an aim to support WFP’s mandate in the country.
The Communication officer will be leading the Gaza Communication teams on the development, outreach and publication of communication for the Gaza operation. The Communication Officer will report directly to the Emergency Coordinator in Gaza with secondary technical reporting line to Head of Government Partnerships and Communication Unit at the Country Office. He/she will also be working closely with the different WFP Units in Gaza field office as well as the Country Office, Regional Offices and HQ.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority):
- Proactively support the development of WFP Palestine CO communication strategy and implement it according to the plan, emphasizing its role as a leading humanitarian agency and leader of the logistics cluster, providing creative and required humanitarian solutions in emergency response.
- Align communication initiatives with organizational goals and stakeholder expectations, ensuring visibility of WFP Palestine CO initiatives and activities across the different field offices, and contributing to enhancing WFP’s positioning and reputation.
- Support the evaluation of communication campaigns and initiatives, measure their impact, and propose adjustments to the strategy as needed to optimize results and engagement.
- Produce and create compelling communication content (videos, pictures, articles, testimonials, etc) tailored to diverse audiences, effectively conveying WFP’s value proposition and impact.
- Collaborate with respective offices RBs/HQ to manage the distribution of content via official channels, including social media platforms, to amplify reach and engagement.
- Support the Production of accurate and timely messaging that supports WFP Palestine CO objectives.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external media professionals and channels to facilitate proactive media coverage of WFP’s initiatives.
- Monitor media coverage and measure communication impact, informing continuous improvement strategies. Address reputational risks promptly and effectively when applicable.
- Contribute to the definition of a dynamic social media plan to leverage digital platforms, networks, and partnerships and implement the plan for increased visibility and support of WFP’s activities.
- Collaborate with donor relations teams to align communication efforts with donor priorities and objectives.
- Identify opportunities and emerging practices in media and communication and recommend innovative solutions to enhance communication effectiveness.
- Provide guidance and support to WFP senior colleagues with representation roles to ensure alignment and coherence in communication approaches and messaging.
- When required, provide technical expertise and guidance on communication-specific risks and mitigation strategies.
- Assess the current state of branding at each office, including flags, signage, wall art, and promotional materials and products that reflect the current brand identity, in line with corporate requirements.
- Collaboration with and aligned on WFP and supply chain messaging and comms strategies
- Lead the development and dissemination of communication materials during emergencies, including press releases, media briefings, and other products that inform internal and external audiences about WFP’s response and needs.
- Support building the capacity of the country office staff on communication best practices, particularly during emergencies, to ensure high-quality communication efforts.
- Support/lead where needed the planning, coordination, and implementation of WFP events, and donor engagement meetings, ensuring that it serves WFP goals.
STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE:
Education: Advanced University degree, or First University Degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.
Experience: One year of postgraduate professional experience with advanced university degree or three years with first university degree is the minimum requirement. Additional years of relevant professional work experience in communications related fields is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent writing skills in English with proven track record of writing capability for communications (examples include press releases, human interest stories, social media content)
- Ability to organise visibility events
- Ability to engage with local media houses and journalists
- Ability to engage in Kiswahili (speak, read, write, translate)
- Communications skills and techniques in media, social media, campaigns, content production, etc.
- Problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and as a part of a team
- Knowledge and familiarity with the political, social and economic context of the Country
Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in Arabic and English.
