The Sustainable Landscape Programme Indonesia (SLPI) is a bilateral initiative funded by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and implemented in partnership with four landscape projects across key jurisdictional areas in Kalimantan and Sumatra. The program aims to strengthen good governance and sustainable management of landscapes, integrating natural ecosystem conservation with improved agricultural production and economic opportunities for local communities.
SLPI is structured into two components:
- Component 1: Focuses on implementing sustainable landscape interventions in selected districts, with four independent landscape projects led by various consortiums.
- Component 2: Led by UNDP Indonesia, serves as the Program Support System, ensuring coordination, knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and engagement with national and sub-national stakeholders.
The program promotes a jurisdictional approach to landscape management, fostering collaboration between government agencies, private sector actors, smallholder farmers, and civil society organizations to achieve sustainable palm oil production, ecosystem restoration, and improved livelihoods.
To enhance strategic communication and knowledge dissemination, UNDP seeks to hire a Project Communication Associate to support awareness-building, stakeholder engagement, and visibility of SLPI’s impacts at both national and international levels. The role will be crucial in documenting lessons learned, developing communication materials, and supporting outreach efforts to promote SLPI’s contribution to sustainable landscape governance in Indonesia.
The SLPI Communication Associate will join the UNDP project team in Indonesia, based in the Project Office and work directly under the leadership and report directly to the SLPI Officer, while working in close collaboration with the UNDP Global FACS Team. In particular, the SLPI Communication Associate will support the Indonesia based project team by playing a major role in the following 3 areas that are relevant to the SLPI, “grounding” them to the local context, and creatively impacting the on-the-ground delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position will work under supervision and guidance of the SLPI Officer based at GCP-SLPI Project, Environment Unit, UNDP Indonesia. S/he will work closely with Project Associate, Admin Clerk, Technical Support and the Global FACS Team.
Support the SLPI Officer and project team to ensure effective project planning and implementation focusing on achievement of the following results:
- Support the day-to-day implementation, coordination, facilitation and reporting of the development of communication work plan, products, and materials of the project
- Support the Community of Practice platform function integrates horizontal learnings and best practices from landscapes partners, as well as vertical learnings among government and relevant private sector / civil society actors.
- Assist in developing and reviewing working documents in relation to communications aspects, which might include work plan, terms of references of activities, talking points, presentation materials, activity reports, and communication materials.
- Support data collection for development of communication materials and products
Support to timely reporting on progress of SLPI communication activities and products development
- Support the development of report and analysis of communication aspects of the SLPI activities.
- Lead and implement the social media management and content development of SLPI, development of SLPI Monthly Editorial Plan Document, which include copywriting and design of the products, according to the SLPI Communications Strategy and Plan (subject to changes and inputs from the donor and project dynamics).
- Lead and manage the development of social media contents and channels of SLPI, SLPI Quarterly Newsletter, BINTANG (Bincang & Tanggap) SLPI x Community of Practice (CoP) Quarterly Webinar, SLPI video products, SLPI fact sheet, SLPI article blogs, SLPI merchandises, and other format of communication products which might be subject to request and approval of the donor.
- Support the development communication materials and media engagement which are related to project activities such as multi-stakeholders meetings, workshops, webinars and field missions. The materials might include interview questions, stakeholders interviewee list, guidance for communication contractors, press release, media monitoring, talking points and post-activity publication.
- Support the preparation of related reports for SECO on the communication aspects. This might include providing advice on narrative inputs, layout design, report format, photo selection of the UNDP Annual Report.
Provides administrative support to project team related to communication aspect
- Support the focal point for administrative and office coordination in the approval of communication products/materials and the recruitment of subcontractors related to communications materials development (such as development of terms of references of the subcontractors).
- Support in maintaining email correspondences and project management documents related to communications work in shared repository, incoming and outgoing correspondence, calendar of events, and maintain computer and manual filing systems.
- Effective implementation of project standard operating procedures in line with the government and
UNDP’s regulations. - Support strategic partnerships, communication and support to the implementation of resource mobilization
- Assist in coordinating and maintaining cooperation with project stakeholders with the government partners, landscape partners, civil society organizations, contracted parties and beneficiaries.
- Support in updating project database of contact lists of the relevant media partners and other related stakeholders who are counterparts for communications of the project.
- In coordination with UNDP’s Communication unit and other relevant counterpart communications department, support the documentation of the project activities as a tool to communicate results. deepen stakeholder knowledge and buy-in to the project, and resource mobilization for the project.
Supports knowledge building and knowledge sharing focusing on achievement of the following results:
- Participation in the trainings for the communications staff.
- Contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
- Effective contribution to learning and knowledge sharing in gender analysis and gender mainstreaming.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Secondary education is required. OR
- University Degree in Communications, Social and Political Sciences, Development Studies, Forestry, Agriculture, Economics, will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement
Experience:
- Minimum 7 years (with Secondary Education) or 4 years (with Bachelor´s degree) of relevant experience in Strategic Communications, Communications for Government, Non-profit organizations and Media/Journalism.
- Demonstrated experience in developing communications strategy, communications plan, communications & knowledge products, and social media editorial plan and contents for national government agencies, international organization and nonprofit organizations, with good understanding of the Indonesian context.
- Has multiple experiences of working in different political and cultural environments and excellent understanding of the Indonesian context.
- Demonstrated experience in plan/project management including, organizing, implementing and reporting on work with tight deadlines.
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS
Word, Excel, Powerpoint Presentation, Google Workspace, etc). - Experience working with UNDP/UN systems
- Previous experience working for UN/UNDP development projects in Indonesia
- Knowledge of national and landscape dynamics related to environmental conservation and agriculture commodity supply chains issues
- Has extensive experience with mainstream media partners (electronic, online and print) dan alternative media partners (bloggers) network at the national and subnational level (province, district) and extensive network of key opinion leaders (KOL) network.
- Experience in environmental conservation, biodiversity, sustainable supply chain, smallholders’ farmers, local and indigenous communities, youth mobilization and women empowerment related issues is an advantage
Required languages:
- Fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesia is required.
