About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a person with some experience in a communications/social
media role to support the development of Community Energy projects across London, tackling
climate change and supporting a move towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.

As a Communications Officer, you will help Repowering London create a stream
of engaging content and outreach materials that get information about our projects and
campaigns in front of London communities, potential partners and funders.

We are looking for someone with a creative outlook and who is committed to creating positive
change, building stronger communities and tackling the climate emergency.

About Repowering London

Repowering London, a social enterprise, is London’s most established Community Energy group,
having established the first and largest Community Energy projects on social housing in the UK.
We have developed an award-winning model which has allowed us to develop local energy co-ops
across London. Our consensus-driven, participatory approach allows us to support individuals,
community groups and Local Authorities to save money, reduce energy usage and support wider
decarbonisation efforts, including London’s net-zero targets.

Person specification

The right candidate will be interested in learning how to build stronger communities and
tackling climate change. You will be comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and
working on your own initiative with support from the wider team and the Communications Manager.
We are open to applicants with a range of skills and backgrounds, but for this role we will be
looking for:

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Experience of using key social media tools (including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram, YouTube) – including content creation, planning and scheduling
  • Ability to use basic design tools to produce leaflets, case studies, and other materials,
adhering to our existing templates, brand guidelines and tone of voice (primarily using Canva)
  • Ability to use WordPress to create and edit posts and pages
  • Ability to translate technical subjects (such as retrofit technology) and challenging
topics (such as the climate emergency) into digestible, approachable and engaging content
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, work to agreed deadlines, and work collaboratively across a
    number of teams.

The following are not essential for the role but would be good to have:

  • Experience with Canva
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create and edit documents
  • Experience with CRM tools for email, newsletter and forms creation.
  • Understanding of social media analytics for impact measurement
  • Photography skills
  • Videography/Video editing skills for social media
  • An understanding of how to engage with a range of diverse audiences.
  • An interest in community engagement and renewable energy – and in bringing people together
to meet the challenge of the climate emergency.

Your role as our Communications Officer:

You will be a key part of Repowering London’s communications team, ensuring that it can respond
to our colleagues’ needs quickly and creatively. Your work will also feed into Repowering
London’s fundraising strategy, allowing the organisation to grow and increase our impact. You
will work closely with Repowering London’s Communications Manager and will interact with other
members of the team on a regular basis. You will need to be flexible and proactive and enjoy
working across a wide range of subject matter and formats on your own initiative. This is a
great opportunity for someone wishing to work on a wide variety of communications tasks and
make a big impact within a truly collaborative team.

Your role and responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the Communications Manager to create a steady flow of social media content
that supports our projects and campaigns. This may include attending in-person events on
    occasion to capture content.
  • Monitoring and maintaining our social media channels – including posting and scheduling in
line with our organisational values and tone of voice. This includes responding to comments and
direct messages, with reference to other team members where appropriate.
  • Supporting the Communications Manager to create on and offline materials, including blogs,
leaflets, explainers, case studies, and FAQs to support our community engagement and
    fundraising work.
  • Working with our Community Leads and Volunteers to create materials that support the
development of our local Community Energy co-operatives.
  • Undertaking website updates using WordPress and Elementor
  • Produce a bi-monthly newsletter using a CRM platform, including news and image gathering
    from the wider team
  • Deputising for the Communications Manager in their absence.
