An integral part of our conservation management plans is our conservation grazing
herd which, used alongside other habitat management activities, aims to increase biodiversity
on a variety of sites across the county.
The Conservation Grazing Co-ordinator is responsible for the co-ordination of the internal
delivery of conservation grazing across land that SWT manages and beyond. Our livestock team
manages over 300 cattle and an expanding sheep flock of 100 animals, on over 330ha of grass
farms and 2700ha of conservation sites across the county.
Over the year, the livestock team calves 70+ cows, makes 150 acres of hay, transports livestock
across the county delivering them to 35+ conservation sites. 50 animals are sold per year for
both beef and breeding stock. The trust has a focus on high herd health and animal welfare. We
maintain a modern, well serviced fleet of vehicles and farm machinery.
This is the ideal opportunity to combine your experience in land management with
your working knowledge of livestock and grazing.
Working collaboratively with the Conservation Managers, this role will prepare and implement
the grazing programme across our own managed sites whilst also looking for opportunities to
develop partnerships, community working and liaison with other landowners to inform and
influence, increasing the potential biodiversity gains beyond our borders.
The successful candidate will need to be a strong, practical resources and livestock manager
who can demonstrate logical thinking, project management skills, passion for the joy of nature
and determination to succeed.
You must have previous experience and an understanding of conservation grazing and its
implementation on publicly accessible sites matched with a personable and friendly approach and
the ability to work with a wide range of people (and livestock).
The job will involve a mix of being outdoors, leading practical tasks or managing contractors
throughout the year, occasional lone working, office work and working with partner
organisations. A full driving licence is essential as our locations cannot easily be accessed
by public transport.
The salary offered to successful applicants will form part of a benefits package
including: above minimum pension contributions, life assurance of 4 x salary, employee support
schemes, 22+ days holiday (plus all Bank Holidays).
We are committed to having an inclusive and diverse workplace and encourage applications from
backgrounds which may be underrepresented in our sector, including people from minority ethnic
backgrounds and people with disabilities. We aim to offer an interview to all candidates that
meet the essential criteria for the post. Please let us know if you require any adjustment to
make our recruitment process more accessible.
Please apply using the Application Form, or a full CV and covering letter to Catherine Roberts,
Director of HR, Culture & Support Services, [email protected] by midday
Thursday 15th August 2024. Interviews will be towards the end of August 2024.
Guided by a collaborative vision where we all play a part in connecting nature, we provide
expert advice and guidance to landowners and managers, making sure the land we look after leads
by example, while inspiring and educating people and organisations across the county on what
they can do. By doing this we will create a Surrey that is full of diverse and abundant
wildlife, where nature is at the heart of individual choices, corporate decisions, and local
economic and policy making. One that helps tackle the ongoing climate emergency, while
supporting the health and wellbeing of all who live here.
