The appointees will join with the existing Acute Physicians in the Department of Acute Medicine at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.Though this primarily post is based at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, cross site work may be required at Peterborough City Hospital.Specialists in Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine recognised by the EEC are eligible to apply. Appropriate office accommodation, secretarial support and IT support will be provided. The post holder will work across our Acute Medicine department on Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), the Short Stay Unit and the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU). The AAU sees, assesses, and treats patients in our acute unselected medical take. Ambulatory care is overseen by a consultant and staffed by specialty doctors and by advanced nurse practitioners, Short Stay Ward receives medical patients likely to be discharged within 72 hours of admission and achieves a high turnover of patients per day.We are particularly keen to recruit and support candidates willing to develop a clinical leadership role.Main duties of the jobo Provide a high quality, safe and compassionate care, to the acutely ill medical patients admitted to our hospital and provide them the best possible experience during their admission.o Active participation in Trust Clinical Governance activities, including audit, mortality review, and appraisal process. Job responsibilitiesThe Trust is committed to develop its acute medical services, and we are planning important changes to our urgent care model. Our current Acute Assessment Unit has 19 beds and 8 recliner chairs. We have a 30 bedded short stay ward, and an ambulatory care unit. Work is in progress to establish Same Day Emergency Care services (SDEC) that include medical assessment, surgical assessment, and ambulatory care and frailty services. These posts offer a unique opportunity to be involved in the planning and development of an integrated SDEC service from an early stage.The department will also work closely with primary care and community to develop better services for our patients.We are looking for newly qualified consultants or established consultants with a passion for Acute Medicine and wanting a new challenge. You must be a capable senior decision maker who will support the rapid assessment of patients including post take ward round for patients, streaming to appropriate pathways and commencement of treatment. There is the possibility of a session of speciality work for those with specialist interests. Consultants are expected to be based within the clinical area when rostered for direct clinical care programmed activities (PAs).Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential

  • MRCP(UK) CCT and/or eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC Acute Medicine or specialist medicine with general medicine accreditation or within six months at the time of the Appointments Advisory Committee
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC Registration and license to practice

Desirable

  • Higher qualification (e.g. MD, PhD)
  • Valid ALS Certificate

Experience and Knowledge
Essential

  • Completed training programme in General or Acute Medicine
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on the full range of problems in adult acute general medicine
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively, under pressure environment
  • Able to organize and prioritize workload

Communication Skills
Essential

  • Effective written (including record keeping) and verbal communication skills
  • Fluent in verbal and written English
  • Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives dignity, privacy, integrity, cultural and religious beliefs

Clinical Governance
Essential

  • Able to demonstrate successful participation in clinical governance activities

Desirable

  • Participation in relevant national Audits
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal

Leadership/Management
Essential

  • Evidence of management experience and/or training
  • Good IT Skills
  • Evidence of knowledge of NHS structure, and current NHS 5 year forward plan

Desirable

  • Attendance on Management course
  • Experience in service development
