Job description

We are looking for Consultant Cardiologist specialising in inherited cardiac conditions (Heart Muscle disease) and genomic medicine.The post will be appointed to the Barts Heart Centre, based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. The merger of three cardiac services into the new cardiovascular centre creates a new world-class institution that will provide state of the art cardiovascular care to a population of six million people. Under the leadership of the local academic health science network, UCL Partners, we are striving for excellence in academic and clinical domains, including the appointment of new clinical academics to ensure future excellence.The Inherited Cardiovascular Disease service at Bart’s Health is the largest of its kind in Europe. The multidisciplinary team includes consultants with training in inherited cardiovascular disease and other sub-specialty interests. The group is fully integrated with the centre for heart muscle disease research at University College London and The William Harvey Heart Centre at Queen Mary University.The applicant will join 8 full time consultants, and manage more than 10000 cardiomyopathy patient episodes/year. There will also be opportunity to be involved in research with clinical and basic scientists on the UCL and Queen Mary campus.The post-holder will also support the General Cardiology teams at other Barts Health and sites by conducting weekend ward rounds by contributing to non-invasive imaging.Main duties of the job1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.2. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts’ business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director and General Manager.3. With the agreement of the Clinical Director and Clinical Academic Group Director, development of his/her own interests and sub-specialities within the specialty, in line with business planning principles and commissioners’ approval, including opportunity to participate in research programmes.4. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.5. To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Director, Service Manager, General Manager and Clinical Academic Group Director.6. Job responsibilitiesThe job plan is anticipated to contain 10 Programmed Activities per week, approximately 8 PAs (direct clinical care) per week and 2 SPAs (supporting) when averaged through the year.This is an outline program, and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with Dr Neha Sekhri, (clinical lead for ICC at Barts Health NHS Trust) and Dr Bejal Pandya (Clinical Director for Specialised Cardiology and Outpatients) within 3 months of their start date.The post-holder will work within the Inherited Cardiovascular Disease Unit at Barts Heart Centre to provide expert care to this expanding population of patients. The applicant will join the 7 full time consultants who manage more than 10000 heart muscle disease patient episodes/year. He/she will be expected to be an expert in cardiomyopathy and be able diagnose, risk stratify and manage patients with a variety of heart muscle diseases.The Inherited Cardiovascular Disease Unit are supported by 6 Patient Pathway Coordinators, one of which would be dedicated to the post-holder to support from a secretarial perspective.Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
Essential

  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Higher degree,e.g. MD/PhD
  • CCT (or within 6 months of date of interview)
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC)

Desirable

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the highest ethical and professional values and a belief in government funded healthcare.

Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential

  • Higher Specialist Training and Minimum clinical experience of 6m in ICC
  • Experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates

Clinical Knowledge
Essential

  • Widespread broad-based knowledge of all aspects of inherited and inflammatory cardiomyopathy

Desirable

  • Knowledge & Understanding in ICC
  • Clinical experience of managing patients with ICC

Audit Management & IT
Essential

  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy.
  • Ability to support team members in business planning via collaboration and discussion.

Desirable

  • Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare
  • Experience of audit management

Research. Teaching skill & experience
Essential

  • PhD/ MD Thesis/Publications in the field of ICC
  • Ability to demonstrate personal experience of clinical research and describe and discuss findings and impact.
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
  • Demonstrate number of first name publications in indexed journals, over a variety of subjects relevant to this post.
