Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is an acute hospital with many community supporting functions across the Fylde Coast and wider Lancashire. Blackpool Hospital sits within Blackpool itself close to the picturesque Stanley Park and within walking distance of the town centre. Blackpool has a highly transient population due to being a very busy seaside resort, which makes this role both unique and challenging for the right candidate.It is an exciting time to become part of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Family as we embark on a transformational change journey in the way which we provide services to our patients and their families across our Integrated Care System.Main duties of the jobThere are two wards within the acute hospital setting dedicated to Care of The Older Person, however the Trust will also have several outliers across other medical wards in the hospital. We also have a rehabilitation hospital based in the seaside resort of Lytham St. Anne’s. The Division boasts a revolutionary Community Frailty Service as part of our out of hospital services, which provides support to our frail local population in their homes and supports our Frailty Virtual Ward. The Trust has recently seen the introduction of a dedicated Acute Frailty Unit which is supported by both acute, community and social care multi-disciplinary teams. Care of the Older Person services include Parkinson’s Disease, Ortho geriatrics and Older Adult Mental Health in-reach. Job responsibilitiesYou will be part of a medical consultant team and supported by a team of junior and trainee medical staff. In addition, we have a variety of other clinical support teams who we work alongside through an MDT approach to care ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. Our multi-disciplinary team in Geriatric Medicine is highly motivated and friendly and they have worked together towards establishing frailty and geriatric services in this Trust. Education and Qualification
Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)
- Higher training in General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatric medicine as required for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
- Entry onto the Specialist Registrar or a UK SpR within 6 months of CCT or significantly progressing CESR
Desirable
- Post Graduate Degree (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc)
- Formal qualification in medical education
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Broad exposure to general and geriatric medicine in the UK.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a full range of acute medical conditions including medical emergencies
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
- Good practical clinical skills
- Competency in Intermediate Life Support
Desirable
- Competency in Advanced Life Support
Skills and Ability
Essential
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with challenging situations
- Basic training in management skills
- An understanding of management in the context of Health Service including clinical governance
- Ability to manage risk and end of life decisions
- Evidence of good organisation and leadership skills
- Experience of teaching junior trainees, medical students and Allied Health Professionals
- Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about improvement
- Evidence of understanding research methodology
- An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives
- Having or planning to obtain National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Good Clinical Practice certification
