Job responsibilitiesGeneral responsibilitiesThe appointee will be expected to cover the following main areas of work:

  • To have and maintain full registration with a license to practice from the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defence organizations
  • To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out within Trust guidelines, to participate in clinical governance working closely with other professionals to provide comprehensive care of older patients in and out of hospital. This will include liaison with general practice and community services with regard to management of patient with chronic conditions
  • Daily attendance of the ward multidisciplinary board round to review flow and discharge planning
  • The appointee will be expected to participate fully as a leader and member of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Trust to develop a service model in keeping with best practice
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care
  • Leadership, development, and organization of the service(s) in their charge in line with the Trusts business plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician for Older Peoples Services, as well as the General Manager and Clinical Director as needed

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MRCP or Equivalent Specialist qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility for entry within 6 months of date of Advisory Appointments Committee) for either Geriatric Medicine or G(I)Medicine by CCT or CESR

Desirable

  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)
  • Appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience
Essential

  • Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine
  • Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)M
  • Experience in Acute Frailty Services

Desirable

  • Ability to organize and deliver a teaching programme
  • Experience in service development
  • Current ALS certificate

Knowledge
Essential

  • Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning

Skills
Essential

  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of supervising medical staff
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to manage staff and resources effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses and other agencies
  • IT skills
