Applications are invited to fill the post of whole-time Consultant Haematopathologist for which applicants should have an established or developing interest. For candidates wishing to additionally report in other specialties, an interest in skin or gastrointestinal pathology would be desirable.This replacement post offers an opportunity to join a Cellular Pathology Service and to develop specialist diagnostic and research interests with the support of the corresponding clinical teams.Individuals wishing to apply must be registered Medical Practitioners (with a licence to practice) and on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee. Applicants must also have Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.The department has recently implemented a digital pathology solution as part of a pathology network initiative and, once full roll-out is achieved, will provide opportunities for flexible working.Although this is an opportunity to fill a permanent position within the department, consideration will also be given to applicants meeting the requirements of the role wishing to take up the post on a fixed-term (minimum one year) basis.For individuals taking up a permanent post, a Recruitment and Retention Premium up to the value of £20,000 is available to the successful candidate and additional assistance with relocation and accommodation is available.Main duties of the jobThe post-holder will join the team of specialist Histopathologists within the department who collectively support the clinical services in Bristol and Weston. The service is delivered from a purpose-built Pathology centre built on the Southmead Hospital site. The department continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.About usThe existing Cellular Pathology service was formed in May 2016 when the North Bristol service and the UHBristol service came together to provide a single service for Bristol. In April 2019, the work that had been delivered from Weston General Hospital also moved to this department. We provide cervical screening services to the South West region.We, Severn Pathology, provide several services under one roof. Importantly, the Genomics laboratory Hub is co-located with the other pathology disciplines and is the lead provider of laboratory services for the South West of England.Individuals wishing to apply must be registered Medical Practitioners (with a licence to practice) and on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee. Job responsibilitiesThe successful candidate will work as part of a team delivering haematopathology services to Bristol, Weston and to other Trusts in the southwest. There is close liaison with those organisations and close working between all of the pathology departments at NBT which form part of the integrated haematological malignancy service. In addition to the clinical work of the department, the successful candidate will be involved in the teaching and supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students , will be supported to participate in audit and will be encouraged to develop collaborative research projects within the Trusts and with Bristol universities.Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or PhD)
  • Management qualification

Training & Experience
Essential

  • Knowledge of the NHS Healthcare system and of Cellular Pathology service redesign processes
  • Subspecialty interest in Haematopathology

Desirable

  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).

Further Training Mgnt Audit
Essential

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit projects.
  • Awareness of the requirements of clinical governance and experience in merging processes to single system demands

Desirable

  • Completion of a general management course or programme.

Research Teaching Publications
Essential

  • Commitment to undertake teaching and training of medical and dental undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Demonstrable research experience. Published research and peer review publications

Desirable

  • Published research and peer review publications
  • Experience in the teaching of undergraduates and clinical trainees Ability to teach effectively
  • Willingness to lead medical staff and biomedical scientists in research activities

Other Requirements
Essential

  • Excellent motivational, communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to influence peers and previous experience of engagement with executive leads of Trust organisations.

Desirable

  • Evidence of attendance at a healthcare management course.
