Consultant Histopathologist

The appointment is a new post for a full-time consultant histopathologist. The successful candidate will join the existing team of nine consultant histopathologist’s, plus one part time specialist; currently five based at the Basingstoke Hospital site and four based at the Winchester Hospital site and one part time specialist working remotely. The post is intended to be full-time and will be for 10 programmed activities. The post will be based on the Winchester site, which is also the laboratory processing hub site. Because this is a single department, consultants may be required to work across sites. The base hospital of the consultant is subject to change as the clinical services across the sites are reconfigured.The appointee will be expected to have broad general experience in diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology. An interest in developing specialist reporting of pseudomyxoma specimens is highly desirable. Basingstoke is one of the tertiary referral centres in the UK for this service. All candidates will be encouraged to develop an interest that will complement the other consultants. Post- mortem work for H M Coroner is outside of this contract but is highly desirable.Main duties of the jobThe job plan is for a 10 PA working week (8.0 Clinical PAs and 2.0 Supporting PAs). The post holder and the Chief Executive (or nominee) will review the job plan each year to ensure that it meets the objectives of the Trust and the personal development plan of the post holder.Local procedures will be followed in the event of any disagreement over proposed changes, culminating in an appeal to a sub-committee of the Trust Board.General reporting is currently performed at both the Basingstoke and Winchester sites. Development of a specialist interest will be encouraged. The appointee will participate in the daily rotas of surgical cut-up and reporting; this will include major cancer resections. The appointee will be expected to have a wide experience of histopathology and will be encouraged to develop an area of specialist interest that will complement that existing within the department. The appointee will also be required to report non-gynaecological cytology. There is no requirement to report cervical cytology samples from the National Cervical Screening Programme.All consultants including the appointee will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust clinical governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit and quality clinical guidelines pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management. There is a Divisional Clinical Governance and Quality Group that meets on a monthly basis.About usThe department of Cellular Pathology is a single department that is currently based on two sites. The Cellular Pathology laboratory is consolidated on to the Winchester site whilst consultant presence is maintained on both sites. The laboratory participates in appropriate external quality assurance (EQA) schemes. Pathology has a Clinisys fully integrated Laboratory Information System covering all departments. The laboratory system is capable of receiving electronic orders from the rest of the Hospital, reports are visible to the hospital electronically. Facilities exist to search computerised records in histology and cytology for research, audit and teaching purposes.
