We are looking for new colleagues who will be able to work with us to achieve this goal.We see this as a great opportunity for those who have traditionally worked within the hospital and those moving into their first consultant post to make a difference to the Cardiology service in County Durham and Darlington.Main duties of the jobThe basic contract is for 10 programmed activites (PAs) with elective outpatient work and inpatient care in Cardiology. Job responsibilitiesThe post-holders will be expected to undertake clinical work in conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop the Cardiology Service.The following are subject to change as the Trust seeks new ways of working.The post-holders will be based at the University Hospital North Durham or Darlington Memorial Hospital, with commitment to in-patient out-patient services in associated hospitals within the Trust.The post-holders will undertake clinical work in conjunction with theircolleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop cardiology services and develop specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department. They will be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of these services.The post holders will work with colleagues to develop services in the community where appropriate.The post holders will share responsibility with the other Cardiologists in the trust to maintain and develop specialist services.The post holders will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues in other clinical disciplines in the hospital and to general practitioners in County DurhamFor management purposes and use of resources you will be accountable to the Clinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.The post holders will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior staff.The post holders will participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff in hospital and community.Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful applications to the local research and development committee.Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – the post holders is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. Youwill be expected to attend regularly, and contribute to, the educational programmed activity held by the Directorate.It is expected that the appointee will actively and regularly participate in all clinical audit.The post holders will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.The post holders will be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is practicable.The post holders will uphold the visions of the Trust and work with the team to help deliver 7 day services for Cardiology services which we are working towards.Person Specification

Essential

  • Good clinical skills
  • To be able to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the service
  • Understands factors affecting patient safety
  • Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit
  • Demonstrates awareness of developing situations in clinical environment
  • Demonstrates ability to solve problems & make timely decisions, even when under pressure
  • Able to use IT to enhance patient care

Desirable

  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical to support decision making

Experience
Essential

  • Competency in management and assessment of all areas of general cardiology at level expected on completion of specialist training in cardiology or non-UK equivalent.
  • Experience of supervising, training and teaching trainees
  • Able to provide evidence of career planning through appraisal process
  • Evidence of being up to date with professional development

Desirable

  • Training in sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing Consultants

Statutory Registration
Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise

Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • To be on, or within 6 months of being on, the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology via a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent e.g CESR, at the time of interview

Desirable

  • Research degree, Masters degree or Teaching Qualification
  • Certificate of Medical Education or other formal training programme
  • MD/PhD
