The Specialist Medicine Directorate is looking to appoint an enthusiastic, highly motivated and dynamic Consultant in Cardiology to join our team at North Manchester General Hospital and become integrated into the Managed Single Service for Cardiology across Manchester Foundation Trust.The successful candidate will join a team of five existing consultants and will deliver, lead and develop heart failure services on the site. There will be potential for complex device implantation sessions at Manchester Royal Infirmary for a suitably trained applicant wishing to peruse this as part of their job plan, and there are additional opportunities for cardiac imaging sessions where appropriate as well.Main duties of the jobThe post is based at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) with allocated base ward work as part of a 1 in 6 combined hot week and on call rota, remunerated at 5% Cat A supplement. The post is offered at 10 PAs/week, negotiable up to a maximum of 12 PAs/week, to include hot week and on call participation.Out of hours work will include non-resident evening, overnight and weekend cover for advice, and for the management of on-site cardiac emergencies, which might include the need to undertake echocardiography, temporary cardiac pacing and pericardiocentesis. The hot week will also include weekend Coronary Care ward rounds and formalised hand-over arrangements.The successful candidate will be expected to deliver excellent secondary cardiology services on site at NMGH, including heart failure clinics and general cardiology outpatient clinics, along with a weekly heart failure ward round and participation in MDT meetings. It would be expected that the post-holder would support the specialist nursing team, and also contribute to heart failure service development and education. Education & Qualifications
Essential

  • Primary medical qualification e.g. MBChB
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • The appointee will hold the MRCP or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
  • On the GMC Specialist Register, holding CCT or expect to do within 6 months of interview
  • An understanding of general principles of research, scientific method and interpretation

Desirable

  • A higher degree e.g. MD, PhD

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of teaching and training experience to support clinical supervisor status

Desirable

  • Publication of research articles

Skills and Knowledge
Essential

  • Clinical expertise in general cardiology, including emergency procedures, and broad knowledge of general medicine
  • Clinical expertise in heart failure +/- pacing and complex device follow up and implantation
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including basic IT skills
  • Ability to work well within a team and establish good professional relationships
  • Evidence of effective leadership – organisational and clinical
  • Understanding and evidence of clinical governance and audit
  • Clinical Governance understanding

Desirable

  • Attendance at Advanced communication skills or similar course
  • Experience in leading service change or improvement
  • Evidence of participation in audit projects
