Consultant in Care of the Elderly and Acute Frailty

The successful applicant will share the responsibility for our current Care of the Elderly ward (dedicated to elderly patients with complex medical and psycho-social problems). They will also support frail elderly patients presenting at the front door (both in the Emergency Department and the Acute Medical Unit (EADU).Enjoy a £20,000 bonus recruitment premium with this vacancyPlease note the Job Description is currently with RCP for approvalMain duties of the job1.Contribute to development of the Care of the Elderly service.2.Provide with the other Consultants a system of mutual out-of-hours cover for General Internal Medicine and cover for annual, study and professional leave. Weekend working will be on a 1 in 6 basis and focus on frailty reviews in the Acute Medical Unit and new Orthogeriatric patient reviews.3.Provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust.4.Liaise with medical staff in other specialities and participate in the regular clinical meetings and other post-graduate activities of the hospital.5.Take part in the continuing medical education programme. This acute care provided from the James Paget University Hospital site at Gorleston is supported by other community services at the Newberry Centre, Kirkley Rise North Lowestoft and outreach clinics.Job description
Job responsibilitiesThe post holder would work alongside 2 other Geriatricians on ward 12 (care of the elderly) to improve the care of older people with complex needs as well as improving the care of frail patients in ED and on EADU.They would be part of a team of doctors looking after a Criteria Led Older Peoples ward dealing with complex acute care with the elderly, which focuses on patients with long term conditions, including dementia and movement disorders. There is a weekly MDT with the Older Peoples Mental Health team including a Liaison Psychiatry Consultant, and a weekly meeting with the Palliative Care team.Prospective candidates should be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT, or be listed on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.Person Specification
