We are looking for an individual to fill this half new half replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James’s University Hospital.This is a full-time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of Thoracic and Breast pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. The breast group also covers NHS screening programme work and both groups include diagnostic cytology as well as histology specimens. The Thoracic service currently has five specialist histopathologists and the Breast service six, with a combination of full time and part time posts. This post is a combination of newly funded thoracic PAs and a direct replacement of some established breast PAs. There is a large postgraduate training programme in the region which the groups provide training for. There are strong links with the academic department of pathology with the largest clinical academic training programme in the country.Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.Applicants should have established skills in Thoracic and breast pathology and demonstrable interest and experience in the specialties including exposure to breast screening programme specimens. Job responsibilitiesIn relation to this post, it is a full time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our department works in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialised pathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.The appointee will have specialist experience in the areas of thoracic and breast diagnostic surgical pathology, and breast cytopathology specimens. We have developed the principles of the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to try and achieve full staffing and an equitable distribution of work among the consultants in our department.Any candidate who is unable to work the fulltime for personal reasons will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.The specific objectives of the post are as follows:Diagnostic service:i) To provide, in collaboration with their Consultant colleagues, a timely and reliable pathology service in Cellular pathology. This will specifically include areas of practice relating to thoracic and breast pathology including screening programme specimens and cytology specimens. Further details of the relevant services are included in section 9.ii) Where appropriate, to participate in the provision of the review service, which is part of the tertiary service activity. It is recognised that, depending on the level of experience of the appointee, further training and experience may be required prior to the assumption of this duty.iii) To provide advice and support to other clinical colleagues, to be available to discuss histopathological findings and to contribute to the audit and monitoring of the clinical effectiveness of medical care.iv) To participate in multidisciplinary clinical care and maintain a regular programme of surgical multidisciplinary team meetings.v) To cover other consultant colleagues for periods of annual or study leave. This will be reciprocated when the appointee takes such leave.vi) To actively participate in and contribute to the continuous service improvement culture in the department.vii) To work with the Clinical Service Lead in Histopathology and the Pathology CSU Leadership Team and other staff in the delivery of an efficient and effective pathology service in keeping with Lean principles.viii) To participate in the effective running of the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities. To engage in the efficient use of staff and resources for the development of the service in support of changing needs of patients and clinical users within the Trust and the network and in the context of the Trust Quality Improvement programme.ix) To maintain a close working relationship with the other consultant histopathologists and the technical and scientific staff within the Department.x) To attend staff meetings and share in the open airing of views for and against any proposals for change and the acceptance of decisions taken following such discussions. Consultants are expected to work within the established management structure and abide by Departmental and Trust Policy.xi) To support the procedures, standards and initiatives required for laboratory accreditation by UKAS Ltd and inspection by the HTA.xii) To participate in Departmental and external audit activity, including audits performed within Regional and National Specialty Networks as well as quality assurance in Histopathology.The consultant will participate in relevant National Specialist EQA Scheme(s) as appropriate to their area of specialisation and participate in CPD activities to support these areas.xiii) To participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching as indicated in section 4.xiv) To contribute to the professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the Department, including post-graduate specialist trainees in Cellular Pathology and sub-specialist pathology trainees.xv) To undertake research and development work within LTHT, if desired. The Trust is the leading contributor to national clinical trials, and pathology consultants all participate as required in the identification and selection of tissue samples according to the trial protocols. In addition, consultants may contribute to clinically based research activity, which may be recognised within the Trusts Research Strategy with the opportunity for additionally funded sessions (see section 3.3 below).Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC). YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practice safely.

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential

  • Should have successfully completed a recognised training programme in Cellular Pathology leading to a CCST (or equivalent) or Histopathology leading to a CCT (or equivalent).
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

  • Dedicated training time in specialist thoracic and breast pathology teams including exposure to NHS screening programme specimens.
  • Relevant higher degree such as PhD or Masters.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
