Job summaryJoin us at Ravenswood Forensic Secure Hospital, as a Consultant in Adult Forensic Psychiatry, you will provide vital care and treatment within a specialist secure unit. You will work alongside a collaborative multi-disciplinary team, offering expert assessment, diagnosis, and care for adults with complex psychiatric needs. With 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, this role provides a balanced focus on direct clinical care and professional development. We welcome applications from psychiatrists passionate about making a tangible difference, through offering first class clinical leadership and clinical care, to support our on-going journey of transformation by bringing new ways of working.You will be supported by a full and expanding complement of multidisciplinary colleagues, with the current position being that you will work with a medical secretary, resident doctor(s), clinical psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist, and our nursing colleagues. To support our patient’s physical health, there is a visiting GP and dentist.Main duties of the jobThe post holder will be expected to:To act as an Approved/Responsible Clinician for patient’s subject to the MHA.Participate in the weekly referrals meeting and undertake assessments for suitability for admission to a low and medium secure ward.Liaise with statutory and non-statutory agencies to assist in the management of mentally disordered offenders.Offer training to professionals.Participate in the on-call rota.Develop a clinical leadership role within the MDT team and across the service, working with colleagues and the senior leadership team to ensure optimal service delivery.Participate in business planning for the locality and, as appropriate, contribute to the broader strategic and planning work of the Trust.Lead the improvement of quality of care within the team and system.To provide assessments of prisoners thought to require hospital admission.Acting as the Responsible Clinician for detained patients, with Mental Health Act duties and active participation in Care Programme Approach reviews.Conduct detailed psychiatric assessments, developing care plans, and monitoring treatment outcomes.Lead clinical decision-making and risk management within a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring patient safety and recovery-focused care.Provide clinical oversight and guidance to team members, supporting a collaborative approach to complex cases.*At least 2.5 SPAs Pro-rata*Opportunities to be a Clinical/Educational Supervisor*Peer support group*Weekly academic teachingAbout usHampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is a newly established organisation, combining the expertise and services of multiple NHS providers to deliver high-quality healthcare across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.With a dedicated workforce exceeding 12,000 staff and a footprint that spans more than 200 sites across Hampshire, we offer an extensive range of services, including mental health, learning disabilities, community, and physical health care, reaching diverse communities across urban, rural, and coastal areas.We are committed to delivering care with compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence, ensuring that our patients and service users are at the heart of everything we do.   • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • To hold Approved Clinician status at the point of taking up post
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register as a Forensic Psychiatrist or within 12 months of CCT at time of interview.
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983

ExperienceEssential

  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge

Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
