Required to fill this new, full-time post. Gastroenterology and Endoscopy services are part of the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Service Unit.All acute surgical, gastroenterology and acute medical wards are co-located in 3 adjacent wings. Gastroenterology in-patient services are provided by two wards in the modern Bexley wing. In this wing are also Upper GI and HPB surgery wards and the transplant hepatology wards. The medical admissions ward and Emergency Dept are in the adjacent Chancellors Wing. Colorectal and the acute surgery wards are located nearby in Lincoln wing. These adjacencies are designed to provide an efficient streamlined service for in-patient services.The gastroenterology wards accept patients with the full range of gastroenterology problems including gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammatory bowel disease, complex nutritional issues and acute liver problems.Within the department there are strong clinical interests in luminal gastroenterology (IBD, nutrition, small bowel disease and therapeutic endoscopy) and a strong academic interest focusing on colonic diseases and database research. The new appointee will support existing gastroenterology services. Within general gastroenterology, there is a strong emphasis on the delivery of outpatient access targets and reduced length of inpatient stayMain duties of the jobThe successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.Applicants should have established skills in gastroenterology and its related specialties including nutrition. Job responsibilitiesIn relation to this post, the Department of Gastroenterology is looking to appoint a Gastroenterologist with an interest in nutrition and intestinal failure to support our provision as one of the largest IF centres in the UK.This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growing intestinal failure workload and help shape a developing service. As a major teaching hospital, surgical centre and home to – amongst other specialisms – the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, our in-patient intestinal failure and nutrition work spans the full range of Types I, II and III intestinal failure. Our success is such that we now have approximately 200 home parenteral nutrition patients and the current model of multi-disciplinary led care works well, but the growing workload would benefit from extra consultant leadership. This will enable improved patient experience with better outcomes.In addition, the postholder will contribute to outpatient and endoscopy targets and will take part in general gastroenterology inpatient care, as illustrated in the representative job plan.Person Specification
Experience
Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology in and outpatients.
  • Specifically, he/she must demonstrate expertise in managing patients with complex nutritional needs/intestinal failure.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Desirable

  • Experience in training endoscopic skills.

Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS MBChb or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM FOR YOU TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree. MD/PhD

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential

  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Gastroenterology. Eligible for inclusion on the GMC specialist register for Gastroenterology / CCT in gastroenterology.
  • JAG accreditation in endoscopy or equivalent.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

  • Additional experience of IBD.
  • Evidence of previous research / publication record.
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

Further Criteria
Essential

  • *Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • *Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
  • -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process
