North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) is seeking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic consultant colorectal surgeon. This is a permanent substantive post. They will assist in the development of a robotic colorectal surgical programme in the trust. The successful candidate will also participate in the delivery of a comprehensive colorectal, general and emergency surgery service. The successful candidate will be joining a close team of colorectal surgeons where a very high proportion of cases are completed using a minimally invasive approach and our NBOCA outcomes are good.The post is based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. The Cumberland Infirmary is the hub for all major emergency and elective surgery. The emergency general surgery on-call rota is a 1 in 12 commitment based at the Cumberland Infirmary. We operate a dual on-call system during working hours to ensure that the management of complex emergency surgical patients is fully supported.NCIC is a clinically led organisation and we will expect the appointee to be involved in the clinical governance and leadership of the general surgical department and wider trust. Education and Qualifications
Essential

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, etc)

Experience and Knowledge
Essential

  • Clinical experience and competence in colorectal surgery
  • Independent in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Proof of competency in elective index cases
  • JAG accreditation in colonoscopy
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable

  • Experience of robotic colorectal surgery
  • Relevant colorectal surgical fellowship.

Management & Administrative
Essential

  • Ability to manage the efficient and smooth running of a colorectal service.
  • Ability to organise and manage own workload efficiently
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Undertaken management training course

Desirable

  • Experience of service improvement, delivering change and team leadership.
  • Commitment to help lead the implementation of a robotic colorectal programme at within the trust

Teaching
Essential

  • Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.

  • Educational Qualification
  • Experience of teaching of non-medical health professionals.
  • Commitment to assist in the training of- a robotic theatre team and first-assistant

Research, Audit and Clinical Governance
Essential

  • Experience of and commitment to medical audit.
  • Experience of research and Clinical Governance
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Desirable

  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research and audit
  • Commitment to Clinical Research
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with the trust research and development department and the Pears Cumbria School of medicine to increase the portfolio of Colorectal research delivered in the region.

Communication skills and abilities
Essential

  • Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff.
