This new Consultant in Infection post will be based mainly at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital although some clinical microbiology commitments will also take place at Cheltenham General Hospital and some community sites.This is a full time post for a Consultant in Infection covering general clinical infection and microbiology responsibilities with a specific role to develop and lead the Trust out patient infection management.Main duties of the jobWork closely with microbiology, pathology and colleagues in healthcare to ensure provision of a comprehensive clinical medical microbiology service including advice and policy development regarding pre-examination, examination and post-examination phases. This work will include clinical rounds including visits to wards and specialist units such as the Departments of Critical Care, clinical interpretation / authorisation of reports and MDT attendance.Meetings with pharmacy colleagues take place as part of antimicrobial stewardship within the Trust.OPAT Lead:The post holder will be OPAT Lead providing strategic leadership and oversight for the ongoing development and expansion of out-patient Infection services across Gloucestershire. This will include diversification to provide better options for managing patients’ infections in an out-patient setting by development of OPAT / CoPAT pathways, close liaison with our Acute Medicine services through Same Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC) settings, virtual ward pathways and improved cross county working with GHC Trust and ICB. Our aim is to enable a higher proportion of our population to have access to these services enabling pressure release on the Acute Trust, bed day savings, patient flow improvements and financial savings.They will work alongside existing CMMs, Consultant AMS pharmacist and OPAT nurses and will engage with OPAT referrals and weekly MDTs. This will likely include clinic based direct review of some patients.About usThis is a new post with the successful applicant joining an experienced team of six Consultant Medical Microbiologists (CMMs), a General Practitioner (GP) with specialist interest in infection and, currently, a post-part 1 FRCPath Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) trainee in Medical Microbiology providing clinical infection services within Gloucestershire. [A1]In addition, the post holder will have responsibility for development and Clinical Governance of the county out-patient infection management streams with a remit to expand upon current services including Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) and Virtual Wards. The aim of this post would be to expand a safe, robust service of out-patient infection services to facilitate earlier discharge, improve patient flow and admission prevention to realise financial savings, improved patient outcomes and improved patient experience. - Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of the relevant Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- FRCPath (UK) by examination or evidence of equivalent qualification
Desirable
- MRCP (UK) or evidence of equivalent qualification
- Higher Medical Degree PhD/MD
ExperienceEssential
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in medical microbiology including the prevention and control of healthcare associated infection.
- Ability to take responsibility for and appropriately prioritise safe, high quality service delivery without direct supervision
- Teaching experience
- Clinical Governance experience including outbreak / incident management
- Research experience including peer-reviewed publications
