Opportunity:
- Consultant in Microbiology, working in a Departmental Laboratory that has been continuously UKAS accredited since October 2016 and is IBMS approved for registration and training of Biomedical Scientists.
- Laboratory is spacious and well-equipped employing over 50 members of staff. Annually over a third of a million non-COVID samples are processed and currently well over 200,000 COVID samples. There is participation in continuously monitored appropriate External QA.
- The department employs rapid liquid mycobacterial culture and a fully automated blood culture system located in blood sciences. The system’s location allows for 24/7 sample loading, a change that has significantly reduced time to detection for blood cultures.
- Post-holder will be expected to liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, Medical Microbiologists, General Practitioners and Health Protection Teams concerning the diagnosis and management of patients and control and prevention of infections, including the provision of telephone advice out of hours.
- The appointee will assist with the development and implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control programme for the Trust which is led by the Director of the Infection Prevention and Control.
- Expected to encourage good antibiotic stewardship and admission avoidance.
- You will develop relationships with the staff in the clinical areas for which they are responsible which will include attending multi-disciplinary team meetings and participating in other clinical or audit meetings as required. Other clinical and laboratory areas covered will be agreed between medical staff to make maximum use of individual’s skills and interests.

Essential criteria
- The ideal candidate should have strong experience in the Consultant field, with background knowledge in Microbiology
- Full GMC registration
- Suitable CCTs include Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology and Virology or Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
- FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
- Ability to deal with complex clinical cases
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Medical Microbiology and Virology
Desirable Criteria
- MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification
- Higher academic qualifications e.g. MSc/MD/PhD in an infection-related topic
