Consultant in Paediatric Haematology and BMT
British Medical Journal
SUBSTANTIVE CONSULTANTS IN PAEDIATRIC HAEMATOLOGY AND BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATIONWe are looking to recruit three whole time positions within the paediatric bone marrow transplant service at the Bristol Royal Hospital for ChildrenFor many years BRHC has had a reputation as an internationally leading paediatric bone marrow transplant unit, performing around 30 allogeneic transplants per year over the last five years, the majority of these for malignant disease. The team is also responsible for the care of children from across the South West of England with malignant and non-malignant disorders, with approximately 40 new and relapsed leukaemia diagnoses per year, a stable population of around 120 severe inherited bleeding disorder patients and a rapidly increasing haemoglobinopathy service with over 120 patients with sickle cell disorders and around 20 transfusion dependent children. Members of the team contribute significantly to national leadership in paediatric haematology and clinical trials. We envisage that roles that we appoint to will have mixed job plans covering both BMT and another aspect of malignant or benign paediatric haematology as we integrate paediatric BMT fully within the broader haematology team. Representative job plans covering leukaemia and transplant or haemoglobinopathy and transplant are attached, but consideration will be given to any applicant with suitable skills and there is potential to adjust the job plans to fit a suitable applicant.Main duties of the jobIn time, we envisage expanding the scope of transplants performed at BRHC to include haemoglobinopathies and other inherited disorders alongside our longstanding expertise in malignant transplant. The trust is committed to making further significant further investment in the wider BMT service, with two ante-chambered negative pressure cubicles due to be completed by the end of 2025 and work underway to strengthen our multi-professional workforceThe posts are based at BRHC, but depending on the role taken there may be a need to deliver outreach clinics to our wider shared care network,Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the out of hours on call rota. At present this is configured as a 1 in 4 out of hours second on call for benign paediatric haematology and 1 in 10 weeknight and weekend first on call for malignant haem-onc-BMT. The exact contribution will depend on the final job plan of successful applicants, with only those with daytime roles within benign haematology contributing to the benign haematology on call. The frequency of first on attending will depend on whether successful applicants are part of that second on call rota.Applicants will be required to have FRCPath/MRCPCH/MRCP (or equivalent).Applications would be considered from applicants working less than full timeThe Division will consider an application for relocation costs in line with our trust policy, please state at the time of your offer if you wish to take this up.About usUniversity Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England.
