The Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgery in North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague to join us on our journey to provide high quality surgical care for the future in an organisation committed to clinical leadership and medical education.We provide a 24/7 consultant of the week service for emergency general surgery patients, elective surgical operating lists, outpatient clinics. Clinical duties are supported by a 24/7 middle grade tier.We have a strong composite workforce made up of Surgical ACP’s, Physician Associates and Doctors Assistants, supporting our SDEC and ward areas, as well as clinics and endoscopy. We also have a team of Nurse Specialists covering the needs of the service.A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available including Endoscopy, CT, MRI and interventional radiology.The department delivers a robust teaching programme for doctors in training, foundation doctors, Physicians Associates and Surgical Care Practitioners.This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are at the forefront of upper gastrointestinal surgical management with opportunities to practice and expand skills through close working relationships with the wider collaborative.Main duties of the jobWe are looking for an enthusiastic surgeon to join a team of consultants to deliver elective and emergency General Surgery and Upper GI services. For those interested in taking on a role in leadership and management, the Trust offers opportunities for development and training.We will work with you to shape your job plan upon successful appointment, review it with you after three months and then annually – so you can maintain the perfect fit. We are happy to explore portfolio roles with opportunities in academic posts, leadership and medical education. We will also provide the essential resources to support you in your duties, including administrative support.There is a four tier 24/7 on-call rota at Carlisle. The 12 gastrointestinal (Upper GI/HPB and Colorectal) surgeons, including the successful candidate, will be responsible for managing general surgical emergencies on a 1 in 6 weekdays first on-call, 1 in 6 second on-call, 1 in 12 weekday nights and 1 in 12 weekends basis at Carlisle. 24-hour emergency theatre is currently available at Carlisle. There is a dedicated CEPOD list, which runs daily from 8am-5pm.The successful candidate will be expected to be trained and competent in the elective and emergency management of Upper GI and general surgery conditions.As a senior employee of the Trust, the post holder will be expected to co-operate with and support medical, clinical and managerial colleagues in delivering high quality care for patients within the Trust.About usAt NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding healthcare services to the population of North Cumbria. Qualifications and Training
Essential

  • Valid Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
  • Relevant CCT, CESR or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • On the Specialist Register for the above or within 6 months of being admitted to the Register by the AAC date

Desirable

  • Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree
  • MD or PhD degree
  • Other relevant postgraduate qualification

Skills/Knowledge
Essential

  • Ability to offer expert opinion on clinical specialist problems in General Surgery
  • Demonstrate sound wide-based knowledge and offer opinion on General surgical conditions
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for General surgical patients.

Desirable

  • Proven track record in undertaking research projects.

Experience
Essential

  • High level of clinical experience and competence in the management of the breadth of common general surgical conditions
  • Demonstrate adequate surgical experience of index general surgical procedures and operations.

Desirable

  • Logbook demonstrating independent experience and practice.
  • JAG accredited endoscopist

Leadership and Management
Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit
  • Ability to lead a surgical team
  • Commitment to continuing medical education, appraisal and clinical governance.

Desirable

  • Demonstration of implemented change in clinical practice

Research and Teaching Experience
Essential

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
  • Ability to critically appraise research and apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects

  • Formal teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
