This is a new 10PA post. It is envisaged that the post-holder will have clinical commitments in both Colorectal and Lymphoma oncology, being actively involved in these disease groups.The post-holder will work to deliver high quality clinical care and develop clinical research opportunities for patients in Bolton with colorectal cancer.To develop and deliver a high quality clinical and research service to improve outcomes for patients with lymphoma. The appointee will be responsible for patients in their care in partnership with colleagues on the Lymphoma Group.Main duties of the jobThe appointee will be expected to develop a significant interest in colorectal and lymphoma oncology delivering systemic therapy. The post holder will:Provide overarching care and responsibility for medical oncology inpatients and outpatients.Develop, lead and deliver a high-quality clinical service to improve clinical outcomes.Support consultant colleagues, junior doctors and nursing staff and liaise closely with senior medical colleagues from other specialties to provide supportive care to unwell patients (acute oncology, CCU, neurology, respiratory etc).Conform to GMC’s guidelines on Good Medical Practice and Good Clinical Practice for Research.Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for patient selection, management decisions and operational logistics (treatment scheduling, risk assessment, etc).Deliver teaching and training to medical and nursing staff, including the option to act as educational supervisor for postgraduate doctors in training.About usThe Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. Job responsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe appointee will be expected to develop a significant interest in colorectal and lymphoma oncology delivering systemic therapy.The post holder will:Provide overarching care and responsibility for medical oncology inpatients and outpatients.Develop, lead and deliver a high-quality clinical service to improve clinical outcomes.Support consultant colleagues, junior doctors and nursing staff and liaise closely with senior medical colleagues from other specialties to provide supportive care to unwell patients (acute oncology, CCU, neurology, respiratory etc).Conform to GMCs guidelines on Good Medical Practice and Good Clinical Practice for Research.Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for patient selection, management decisions and operational logistics (treatment scheduling, risk assessment, etc).Deliver teaching and training to medical and nursing staff, including the option to act as educational supervisor for postgraduate doctors in training.Participate in CPD activities in line with personal and Trust policy.Actively participate in the annual cycle of appraisal and job planning and its associated regulations.Undertake mandatory training as directed.Assist in enhancing the international standing and profile of the Department of Medical Oncology.Forge relations with the academic sector, the public sector, industry, and the community compatible with the Trusts external affairs agenda.The remainder of the appointees professional time will be deployed flexibly on other clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, clinical audit etc. Detailed elements of the job plan arrangements will be agreed with the successful applicant when in post.ColorectalThe post holder will be one of seven Medical Oncology Consultants specialising in Lower GI cancer who have on average 105 new patient referrals and 650 Follow up appointments per consultant per year and will be an active member of the Bolton Colorectal Cancer MDT.Medical oncology consultants are as follows:Dr Mike Braun (Lead)Dr S MullamithaDr K MartiDr K KamposiorasDr J HasanDr R BroadbentThe lower Gi team is also supported by five clinical nurse specialists and two nurse clinicians, 2 advanced clinical practitioners, a trainee advanced clinical practitioner and a care-coordinator.The post holder will be reporting to the disease group lead and Clinical Director with additional support from the Service Manager for Networked services.There is currently collaborative working within both the Lower GI medical and clinical oncology research teams which the successful applicant will be expected to participate in. The group meet regularly to discuss clinical care and research objectives, team structure and to maintain effective team working.The post holder will be expected to take on leadership, training and management roles as an active member of the Medical Oncology department. Examples include: being a Chair of a clinial committee, Clinical Lead of a clinical pathway or clinical representative at Trust meetings.LymphomaThe post holder will be one of four medical oncology consultants specialising in Lymphoma who have on average 65 new patient referrals and 670 follow up appointments per year per consultant.Medical oncology consultants are as follows:Dr Kim Linton (lead)Professor John RadfordDr Rachel BroadbentDr Elizabeth PhillipsThe lymphoma team is also supported by one specialty Doctor, one clinical research fellow, four clinical nurse specialists, one nurse clinician and a physician associate.The post holder will be reporting to the disease group lead and Clinical Director with additional support from the Service Manager for Networked services.Participate in a 1 in 4 attending consultant rota within the lymphoma team. When on attending duties, they will be expected to provide timely expert input to guide the management of newly admitted patients, daily senior oversight of inpatient management and a weekly consultant ward round of lymphoma inpatients at The Christie. There is no out of hours cover required as part of this attending rota.Develop, lead and deliver early and late phase clinical trials of novel therapies and advanced cellular therapy medicinal products to patients with lymphoma.Contribute to the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team and Department of Medical Oncology strategy documents.The post holder will have access to office accommodation with computer, intranet and internet and secretarial support. There is provision for both flexible working and working from home where applicable to the appointees timetable.Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • GMC registration with a license to practice Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register via one of the following: a.Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) b.Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)

  • An appropriate higher degree

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of productive ethical research relevant to oncology
  • Wide experience of Oncology including Colorectal and Lymphoma Cancers
  • Appropriate experience across all disease groups in Medical Oncology
  • Experience with immunotherapy and targeted therapy
  • Evidence of wide experience and training in general and oncological medicine at specialist registrar or similar (e.g. specialty doctor) level
  • Research experience
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates
  • Experience of clinical audit

  • Recent publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Relevant experience

Essential

  • Evidence of contribution to teaching
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching/education of junior doctors, nurses and medical students
