CONSULTANT OPHTHALMOLOGISTSpecial Interest in High Volume Cataract Surgery & Anterior SegmentOphthalmology Department, Ninewells HospitalAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Ophthalmologist to join our forward-looking and innovative clinical team. The Department of Ophthalmology based at Ninewells Hospital is well established within the region and organisation. . As well as delivering Ophthalmology services within a university and teaching hospital environment, a wide range of sub specialty interests have been developed to national and international acclaim.The successful applicant will play a major role in a truly innovative and internationally recognised, high volume cataract service and support our existing corneal serviceoffering all aspects of corneal services and surgeries. Other sub-specialty interests to compliment the needs of the department will be considered, however.Dundee has pioneered a model of High Volume (HV) cataract surgery delivery that has been picked up for commendation by RCOphth president, Professor Burton, and recognised by Scottish Government, cabinet secretary for health (2024). We are looking for a candidate with a track record of comfortably delivering 12 cataracts per 4 hour session, happy to train STs and cascade this skill as a sub-speciality interest in its own right, but likely combining this with Cornea and anterior segment skills.Currently we have the highest single site of ISBCS in the UK NHS, and have pioneered direct referral to listing for >90% in the HV service. Confidence with and experience of this would be requisite in the successful candidate.Scotland has around 40,000 on waiting lists for cataract. Scotland has a different healthcare model to England and Wales, which is not tariff based. Motivation has to be intrinsic and informed by a concern for the public health good of delivering this service at scale. But ideas to develop supra-regional provision of care to neighbouring health boards as benefiting the Tayside service may be viable in future.Our listing time from primary care has been reduced to 11 days for the HV referral stream, using digital systems, which accounts for about half the departments throughput. This post support the doubling the HV services, essential to turn around the social and holistic consequences of visual disability from cataract. Ideas for service re-design and improvement would of course be welcome. A higher degree in Public Health would be welcome but not essential. As a teaching hospital leading in this area, this provides ample space for an academic career publishing in QIP and HSR; care delivery and quality papers.
