This is a 10 PA post within the Department of Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedics at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. The successful candidate would be expected to offer a full time commitment to elective and emergency paediatric services, including a 1 in 8 on-call rota for trauma in children.Full participation in a 24 hour, 1 in 8 on call rota. The week day on call commitment comprises of a combined adult and paediatric trauma meeting a morning acute fracture clinic an afternoon trauma theatre list in addition to on call out of hours working. The post holder does not have to be resident when on call.Main duties of the jobDedicated afternoon trauma operating lists occur Monday to Friday, with shared CEPOD lists for out of hours and weekend operating.o An afternoon fortnightly follow up fracture clinic and additional seasonal (April to October) follow up fracture clinics.An elective commitment comprising of weekly elective clinics and 42 Elective theatre lists per year. The elective workload will include patients recruited through out-patient and in-patient referrals. The post holder will ideally have a sub interest in limb reconstruction and complex soft tissue knee. Qualifications & Training
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • Fellowship in paediatric orthopaedics of suitable duration

Desirable

  • Additional Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc) relevant to clinical speciality

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of first class professional practice in paediatric trauma and orthopaedics
  • Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • At least 12 months of specialist paediatric trauma and orthopaedics

Desirable

  • Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
  • Experience in frame application for paediatric elective and trauma cases
  • Experience and interest in paediatric soft tissue knee injuries

Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential

  • Up-to-date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
  • Ability to practice independently on the on-call trauma rota
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
  • Ability to make clinical decisions at Consultant level
  • Ability to practice independently on the on-call trauma rota.

Desirable

  • Broad range of IT skills
  • Fellowship training in subspecialty interest to complement the existing departmental interests
  • Experience of formal paediatric teaching and website development

Clinical Governance and Audit
Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation in routine clinical audit
  • Positive approach to evidence based practice
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation

Desirable

  • Attendance at a management training course and evidence of learning from it
  • Experience in organising audit
  • Experience of risk management

Research
Essential

  • Knowledge of the principles involved in research
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical and/or basic science research

  • Evidence of peer review research papers
  • Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.

  • Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
