The Care of the Elderly department at Barnsley Hospital NHS FT provides outstanding geriatric services to 4 medical wards including our Acute Stroke Unit and Acute Frailty areas.We have a very innovative and proactive frailty team who have developed an Electronic Geriatric Assessment tool, as well as a Frailty SDEC area and front door frailty service in the Emergency department and CDU.The department has an outpatient area (Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit) with a long tradition of providing multidisciplinary care for patients with falls, incontinence and Parkinsons disease. Besides Parkinsons and Falls clinics. We also run tilt table, syncope, continence, general internal medicine and geriatric medicine clinics.We have a specialist continence team, falls prevention team, dementia nurse specialist, dementia and delirium lead, and there will be a scope for cooperation with the successful candidate to improve those services.The department also has a vibrant and developing Integrated Care Service which provides a Virtual Frailty Ward service (step up from community and step down from hospital) in conjunction with community nursing colleagues, as well as thirty intermediate care and rehabilitation beds in the Acorn Unit.Main duties of the jobStrengthening the delivery of a high-quality acute stroke medicine service across Barnsley.Maintaining high quality stroke services with a commitment to the ICS.Providing leadership and expertise in the management of acute stroke in the emergency pathway.Developing new, high quality, patient centred stroke services.Liaising and developing working policies with relevant hospital departments, local General Practitioners, nurses and paramedical staff.Developing innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on community management where appropriate.Maintaining close links with colleagues on all sites.Providing a 7-day service with colleaguesTeaching and training undergraduates as well as postgraduate doctorsQuality assurance of the service and individual practiceDeveloping with colleagues, an integrated stroke service across the Barnsley health economy.About usPlease note that the Trust reserves the right to close a position early.Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a high performing Trust achieving a Good rating in our most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessment and achieving significant progress in the delivery of our strategic objectives.   • MRCP or equivalent.
  • You must be on the specialist register for stroke medicine as well as either general internal medicine or acute medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee.
  • Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree.

Teaching, Training, Audit and ResearchEssential

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes.

Desirable

  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications.
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision.
  • Attendance at a teaching course.
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education.
  • Critical Appraisal skills.
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology.

ExperienceEssential

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Acute Medicine.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions on range of problems within the specialty.

  • Wide based experience in general internal medicine.
  • Attendance at a recognised management course.
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions.
  • Evidence of continual learning and development.
  • Understands self (strengths and weaknesses) and impact of behaviour on others.
