Description:Consultant Physician with an Interest in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Academic Research – 1 Post.NHS Lanarkshire University Hospital WishawWe are seeking applications from enthusiastic and innovative individuals keen to join our existing team of Consultant Physicians in University Hospital Wishaw (UHW). This is a replacement post following a retirement. The successful candidate for will join the 3 existing Consultants and one locum specialty doctor in diabetes and endocrinology, providing a comprehensive diabetes and endocrinology service.The job plan includes 2 PAs approved for academic research per week with 7 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1 for supporting professional activities (SPA). The 7 DCC PAs will consist of diabetes and endocrinology clinics, acute medical receiving and in-patient care. The successful applicant, as well as developing research interests, will be encouraged and supported to develop specialty/sub-specialty interests to complement the existing diabetes and endocrinology specialist services.The diabetes and endocrinology department is supported by 2 WTE diabetes specialist nurses, diabetes dietitians and specialist podiatrists as well as 2 endocrine nurse specialists who work across the three Lanarkshire hospitals.We have recently expanded our non-medical workforce by employing and training an extended scope nurse practitioner in diabetes. Community diabetes nurse specialists also run formal clinics where they prescribe and/or advise primary care on prescribing.The diabetes and endocrinology team work closely with our colleagues across the three Lanarkshire sites and have established MDT services which are supported by enthusiastic colleagues in other specialties. These include diabetes technology MDTs, endocrinology MDT supported the biochemistry department; weekly diabetic foot MDT with input from infectious diseases/OPAT, vascular surgeons and technicians, orthopaedics, podiatry and orthotics; gastroparesis MDT with gastroenterology, dietetic and upper GI surgical colleagues. In addition, we refer patients into and attend regional adrenal and pituitary MDT meetings.We provide general endocrinology clinics with planned investigations supported by our endocrine nurse specialists and medical day bed unit. There are diabetes subspecialty clinics including young adult diabetes, diabetes transition (in collaboration with paediatric colleagues), diabetic foot, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and insulin pump/technology. Wishaw is the Lanarkshire centre for the diabetes obstetric service with two outpatient diabetes-obstetric clinics per week.The two academic research sessions will be supported by colleagues in the NHS Lanarkshire Research and Development (R&D) department which has developed and expanded significantly over recent years. NHS Lanarkshires R&D strategy for 2023-2026 aims to maximise the level of high-quality, NHS ethics-approved health and care research being carried out in NHS Lanarkshire for the benefit of our patients, staff and NHS Lanarkshire as a whole. The successful applicant will be supported by consultant colleagues with research interests, research nurses, R&D management and there are dedicated clinical research rooms onsite at UHW. The successful candidate will be supported and expected to develop their own research portfolio and act as local Principal Investigator in funded research studies.The hospital has close affiliations with the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Dundee. The medical department is committed to undergraduate medical training and postgraduate training of Foundation Doctors, Core and Higher Specialist medical trainees, GP Trainees and Acute Care Common Stem trainees. There is an active post-graduate medical education programme run at UHW throughout the academic year.The successful candidate will have a commitment to the acute medical receiving rota (approximately 1 in 20). They will also have a commitment to in-patient care supporting the current team of consultants, specialty and trainee doctors on the diabetes and endocrinology ward.Wishaw is a medium sized town situated in the centre of Lanarkshire. It has excellent transport links and is only 30 minutes travelling time from Glasgow with access to excellent shops and first class theatres, visitor attractions and sporting facilities. Edinburgh is also within easy travelling distance. Both cities have international airports and a host of leisure activities. Wishaw is only 10 minutes from the picturesque Clyde Valley where there are amazing opportunities for those with an interest in outdoor pursuits. There are options for housing in the city, town or countryside.
