Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to:

  • support the skin oncology service
  • offer Sentinel Lymph node biopsy to patients.
  • be able to undertake block dissections of the axilla and groin, including above the inguinal ligament resections
  • undertake or be trained in electrochemotherapy
  • work closely with the Dermatology, Oncology and Radiotherapy, in providing Melanoma and non-melanoma skins cancer.
  • participate in the emergency workload and be competent in management of adult and paediatric hand trauma
  • liaise with consultant colleagues to provide internal cover for annual and/or sick leave for on call duties; under exceptional circumstances this may require some flexibility in the appointee’s hours.
  • participate in a Trauma Consultant of the week model (4 times a year) when normal morning commitments are replaced with ward round and trauma cover
  • contribute to the teaching of junior medical staff and medical students.
  • The post holder will also be expected to take an active role in educational supervision for core and specialty surgical trainees.
  • take an interest in research
  • actively contribute towards quality improvement in the Plastic Surgery service
  • undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service
  • act in line with GMC Good Medical Practice, including Duty of Candour

Person specificationQualifications and TrainingEssential criteria

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCS (Plast) or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • Higher degree (MD or PhD)
  • Post-CCT (skin cancer)

ExperienceEssential criteria

  • Experience and training in full range of emergency and elective plastic surgery conditions
  • Experience in skin oncology

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of service development in plastic surgery

SkillsEssential criteria

  • Commitment to working co- operatively and collaboratively with other health professionals and organisations
  • Ability to manage & lead a surgical firm
  • Involvement in audit
  • Experience of teaching & supervising junior doctors in training

Desirable criteria

  • Undergraduate teaching experience
  • Ability to manage & lead research projects
