This is a full time (10 programmed activities) post based at the Royal Free NHS London Foundation Trust’s Plastic Surgery department. The Plastic Surgery department at the Royal Free Hospital is a busy and dynamic unit that provides care both for the local population in North Central London, and to a much larger network around the rest of North London in addition to the home counties.The department has a strong reputation for provision of care for patients in breast reconstruction, skin malignancy, hand surgery, facial palsy, sarcoma reconstruction, ear reconstruction and abdominal wall reconstruction. The unit offers support to a wide variety of specialties both within the Royal Free and across our wider network. The unit has strong academic links and a large well-established MSc program.This post will focus on delivering patient-centred care across the Royal Free Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and the wider network. The workload includes complex hand surgery, hand trauma, and abdominal wall reconstruction as well as a commitment to skin cancer management. There is an on-call commitment with this post.Main duties of the jobTo work in close collaboration with the Infection Control Team.To ensure that monitoring of clinical practice is undertaken at the agreedfrequency.To ensure that the ward environments are cleaned and maintained to thehighest standards; ensuring that shortfalls are rectified, or escalate asnecessary.To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues are provided to theDirectorate’s Governance structures.To ensure that all staff are released to attend infection control-relatededucational sessions and staff with specialist roles, e.g. link practitioners, arereleased to undertake their duties.Health and Safety at WorkThe post holder is required to:Take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself/herself and otherpersons who may be affected by their actions or omissions at work.Co-operate with the employer in ensuring that all statutory and otherrequirements are complied with.About usThe Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s biggest and most innovative trusts. The post will involve a specialist interest in complex hand surgery, hand trauma, skin cancer management and abdominal wall reconstruction, in particular. A higher degreewould be an advantage as the department builds on its research base.The nature of central and peripheral network commitments will be subject to review and modification as the service develops and evolves and a flexible approach to job planning is essential.Responsibility for policy and service development: He or she will also beexpected to actively engage with clinical commissioning group colleagues and colleagues around our clinical network with a view to strengthening the provision of the plastic surgery service and our network.The postholder will be expected to take an active and engaged role indepartmental management and academic responsibilities as allocated byagreement across the department.Be a member of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialty Care Group. He/she will work in an integrated way with other members of the department. Clinical and administrative work and junior staff will be shared with other consultants.Participate in a strong undergraduate teaching programme in Plastic Surgery. The postholder will be involved in undergraduate University College London(UCL) medical student teaching at the Royal Free, including allocation of students to clinics, small group lecturing and organisation of staffing for observed structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). The postholder would be expected to interact regularly with the Medical School.Contribution to postgraduate teaching and training of junior staff is alsoexpected.The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, and the Trusts clinical governance systems.Support infection prevention & control and antimicrobial stewardship activities.Participate in laboratory and clinical audit.Participate in service development and policy review.Participate in CPD and quality assurance activity including annual appraisal andrevalidation.
