Organizational Context

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian network. It comprises 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies working to save lives, build resilient communities, strengthen localization and promote dignity worldwide.

IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), together with its member national societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The IFRC’s work is guided by the following fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

The IFRC is headed by its Secretary General and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The headquarters is organized into three main divisions: i) National Society Development and Operations Coordination; ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization; and iii) Policy, Strategy and Corporate Management Services.

IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe and the Americas. The Federation also has country group delegations and delegations from countries all over the world. Together, the Geneva headquarters and the field structures (regional, sectoral and national) make up the IFRC secretariat.

In line with the 7 transformations of the IFRC 2030 strategy: supporting and developing National Societies as strong and effective local actors, inspiring and mobilizing volunteerism, ensuring trust and accountability, working effectively as a distributed network, influencing humanitarian action and undertaking digital transformation, financing the future. The IFRC strives to help National Societies build more effective and robust financial and organizational development systems and capacity.

The IFRC office in Abuja is the National Society (NS) Red Cross Support Centre for the Abuja Country Group delegation (Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana) and has a status agreement with the Nigerian government.

The Abuja Country Cluster Delegation carries out the IFRC’s mandate in the sub-region, focusing on disaster management, National Society capacity building and humanitarian diplomacy.

Job Purpose

  • We are seeking highly talented senior-level Humanitarian and Development proposal writers and technical experts to be included in our consultants’ database. Interested consultants should have extensive experience working on initiatives funded by USAID, UK FCDO, EU-ECHO, INTPA, Global Affairs Canada, UN agencies, World Bank, and other major donors including having experience in private-public partnerships.
  • The position will report to the Partnership Lead in Abuja.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • He/She must exhibit excellent knowledge of donor-funded development and humanitarian program design.
  • Ability to design, conceptualize, and interpret project Log frame.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, think and plan strategically, and communicate with key actors in a dynamic and unpredictable operating environment
  • Demonstrated strong management, coordination, teamwork, and planning skills with a proven ability to function effectively with multiple counterparts in private, public, and NGO sectors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English including excellent facilitation skills and demonstrated technical writing skills for publication.
  • He/She must understand the thematic areas (e.g., emergency preparedness and response, nutrition, health, WASH, education, livelihood, CVA, SRHR, food systems, and social protection) with the skill to integrate cross-cutting areas such as digitization, climate adaptation, inclusion, disability, and gender programming
  • Collaborate with thematic activity managers and the budget team to develop concept notes, and technical and budget proposals promptly, based on the identified areas.
  • Work with the creative content creator to develop summary presentation materials to aid advocacy efforts and/or outreach efforts.
  • Knowledge and skills: General knowledge and understanding of Humanitarian Principles and core standards e.g. CPIE Minimum standards, Core Humanitarian Standards, SPHERE, and another relevant international standards for humanitarian response.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse international teams.
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines, and intense pressure to perform.
  • Proficiency in word processing and Microsoft Office applications

Education

  • A degree in Development Studies, Business Studies, or Social Science
  • A master’s degree or equivalent in International Affairs, master’s in public health, Development, or a related subject will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Experience in the INGO sector with at least 5-7 years of work experience in a similar role.

Knowledge, Skills and Languages

Integrity: Extremely reliable, responsible, and commit to abide IFRC’s core values and humanitarian principles

Knowledge & Computing Skills: Knowledge of the humanitarian sector, basic finance, and admin skills, versed in MS Office, Google Drive, online documentation, presentation tools, and Zoom/Skype meetings.

Proficient and efficient in handling finance, administration, and information management tasks, savvy in social media tools, knowledge of website design, photography journaling, Canva, and media scheduling tools.

 

Language Skills: Proficient in English
