St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust would like to appoint a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to specialise in the delivery of hip and knee arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty and trauma surgery.Working in partnership with the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, St George’s is the Major Revision Centre (MRC) for South West London. This requires us to provide/advise on patient care involving many complex matters including prosthetic joint infection, major bone loss and peri-prosthetic fractures.The successful applicant will work in a well-established consultant team, supported by a Senior Fellow, higher surgical trainee and a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Dual surgeon operating has been part of our discipline for many years.The Trauma & Orthopaedic department leads on all poly-trauma cases ensuring that all trauma is managed appropriately. The orthopaedic ward has been converted into the ‘trauma unit’ where all trauma patients, excluding patients with a serious head injury, will be managed along with orthopaedic trauma and elective orthopaedic work. Trauma cases are currently overseen by the orthopaedic consultant of the week, with this consultant changing on a rotational basis. At the weekends there is partial double consultant cover.The Major Trauma Centre is led by the T & O department and works on a 7 day consultant of the week model. Job responsibilitiesProgrammed Activities:DCC 7 PAOn-Call 2 PASPA 1PATotal 10PAIt is expected that the post holder will complete their supporting activity through attendance at the care groups operational management meeting, the orthopaedic clinical governance meeting (including presenting on morbidity and mortality) and through teaching commitments. Where these activities are timetabled to occur at the same time as other programmed activities the post holder will ensure that appropriate and timely arrangements are made to enable their attendance.The Trust and the post holder may expect of each other that appropriate time is set aside for audit, appraisal and personal CPD and the post holder can expect reasonable professional leave in support of CPD and specialty development. The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process and Mentoring by the CGL.Surgical working requires good team working. The role of each Consultant is intended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants in the Department and in the Trust. The RCS supports measures to ensure that a new appointee should be appointed on a similar footing to other Consultants within the department.Clinical Governance and AuditThe post holder will be required to participate in the following meetings as appropriateTrauma there is a daily trauma planning and handover meeting that serves to ensure that patients receive the most effective care and acts as a learning opportunity for junior clinical staff.Clinical Governance Meeting (Trauma and Orthopaedics) this takes place once every six weeks and clinical commitments are cancelled to allow for the participation of all staff. Morbidity and Mortality data is discussed and all staff have the opportunity to present updates on their audit work. Clinical Governance issues affecting the department are discussed i.e. staffing issues, organisation of care, complaints, service developments including use of new drugs/equipment, updates on research etcCare Group Meeting this takes place once every 6 weeks on the same day as the Clinical Governance Meeting and attendance from all consultants is expected. The meeting provides an opportunity for key Trust issues to be discussed i.e. finance, strategic planning, changes in policy etc It is also an opportunity for all T& O staff to discuss together any operational issues facing the department and to explore how they can be solved.Clinical and governance meetings in the network Trusts on an ad-hoc basis.Educational DutiesSt Georges Healthcare NHS Trust is a major teaching hospital and as such the post holder is expected to actively support the education programmes in place within the Care Group.Under-graduate education the department supports St Georges Hospital Medical School in the delivery of undergraduate training and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to MB BS teaching.The post holder will support the on-going training of junior doctors and non-medical staff working with the care groupThe department has strong involvement in research and is engaged in numerous NIHR studies. The post holder will be encouraged to participate and contribute to the research portfolio in their areas of interest.Corporate ResponsibilitiesCross cover and leave arrangements in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service and in line with good professional practice, the post holder will be expected to undertake all duties regularly. Notification of annual or other arranged leave and cover arrangements must be at least 6 weeks prior to the proposed leave and must be made in writing to the Specialty Manager for Trauma & Orthopaedics. The annual leave entitlement is currently 32 days per annum. Routine clinical duties such as outpatient clinics and operating lists may only continue in the absence of the post holder if supervised appropriately by a consultant colleague (see Policy on the Supervision of Junior Doctors in the Operating Theatre). The post holder will be expected to agree mutually agreeable cross cover arrangements with his/her colleagues and for these arrangements to be documented in writing. If it is not possible to cross cover the sessions will be made available to other surgeons both within and outside of the care group. Under exceptional circumstances, it may be necessary for the post holder to cover emergency duties at short notice but the Trust will make alternative arrangements as soon as possibleRelationships with consultant colleagues the demands of the T& O workload are such that close and on-going collaboration with colleagues within and outside of the T& O care group is required. It is expected that the post holder will follow the agreed care group and unit policies with regards to the admission of patients and the transfer of patients between teams.The appointee will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of his/her department. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department. The post-holder will have access to adequate office space, furniture and equipment. The post holder will have secretarial support and will make use of the trusts digital transcribing service for the purposes of completing clinic letters.The post holder is expected to follow agreed Trust policies with regards to the introduction of new drugs/theatre equipment and will fulfil their responsibilities with regards to clinical coding. The appointee will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration with GMC
  • Postgraduate medical qualification -FRCS (T& O) or equivalent
  • On UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT / CESR
  • ATLS or equivalent
  • At least 12 months fellowship level training in Arthroplasty and revision surgery

Desirable

  • Higher qualification e.g. PhD / MD / MSc

Knowledge
Essential

  • Ability to take full and independent clinical responsibility
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCST
