You will work as part of the Urology team to provide a high quality Urology service that aims to provide excellent patient care. This includes delivery of out-patient, emergency, day-case and inpatient services independently.You will be expected to manage their own work programme within the broad parameters of Department policies and procedures, and will be responsible for determining the associated work activities using their initiative.Working Hours: As job planRLI On-call: 1:7 (Mon to Thu) with RLI 1:7 weekend on call and FGH On-Call 1:7 (Mon to Fri) with prospective cover.The anticipated job plan is included but may be subject to changes and involve working at other sites within the UHMB communityFull GMC Registration with a licence to practice.Entry on the GMC specialist register or be within six months of obtaining your CCT at the time of interviewInterview date TBC September 2024Main duties of the jobApplications are invited for the post of Urology Consultant at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust. This post is to support the current Urology service Cross Bay. You will work as one of a team of 6 other Consultants and 5 Speciality Doctors, based at the University Hospital Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust.Please see attached Job Description for more details.About usWe operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe BayOur community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Education and Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • FRCS Urology or equivalent
  • Be on the specialist register or within 6 months of completing CCT

Desirable

  • Higher degree (e.g. MSc, MD, PhD)

Experience
Essential

  • Working within a Urology team in a District General Hospital
  • Working unsupervised during operating lists covering the spectrum of general Urology cases

Desirable

  • Experience at the leave of a Consultant Urological Surgeon

Skills, ability and knowledge
Essential

  • Works well within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to changes in local demand and clinical practice
  • Evidence of being able to take initiative and lead junior members of the team and experience of supervising junior
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, relatives and staff
  • Evidence of leadership skills

Training
Essential

  • To have had supervised training in a Urological Department/s for a minimum of 5 years

Research and Development
Essential

  • Understanding of research methodology and ethics

  • Evidence of peer reviewed publications

Teaching
Essential

  • Commitment to teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, nursing and allied health professionals

Desirable

  • Experience of problem based learning
  • Evidence of participation in educational skills training

  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS Consultants
  • Ability to communicate and work as a team with consultant colleagues and other professionals
  • Evidence of commitment to audit
