Job description

The activities of PHRI’s Contracts Department provide critical support for PHRI’s mission to conduct trans-disciplinary research to improve major health outcomes in common and neglected conditions affecting Canadians and populations across the world. As a member of the PHRI’s Contracts Department, the Contracts Specialist will provide contract negotiation and support for the research activities at PHRI.Reporting to the Research Counsel & Contracts, the primary responsibility of a Contracts Specialist is to undertake the review, drafting, negotiation and management of research contracts for specific research teams and studies. Responsibilities include:

  • Process a high volume of clinical research contracts and other related agreements
  • Review, analyze, draft and negotiate contractual terms with external sponsors, research institutions and other entities
  • Ensure that all contracts comply with PHRI policies and applicable laws
  • Provide contracting services and support to PHRI research administrators
  • Establish and implement effective and efficient contract administration procedures
  • Assist in the development of new policies for contract administration and related areas
  • Participate in training activities related to policies governing the conduct of clinical research
  • Act as the liaison between PHRI/McMaster University/ Hamilton Health Sciences and funding agencies

Qualifications 1. An undergraduate degree with knowledge of contract law and at least 3 years’ experience drafting, interpreting and negotiating agreements and contract management; or a law degree, law clerk designation, business or health administration degree with related experience
2. Experience in academic research, university, hospital and/or clinical research environment preferred
3. Exposure to and understanding of research-related contracts preferred
4. Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, including superior English language (reading and writing) skills
5. Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and organizational skills
6. Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive documents for review simultaneously
7. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others in a fast-paced environment
8. Previous experience in project management, understanding, interpreting and writing policies and procedures preferred
9. Computer proficiency, knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook
