Position description

The Development and Outreach Department is led by the Chief Development Officer and handles the organization’s fundraising and outreach activities. The Prospect Research & Vetting team (PRV) works with colleague front line fundraisers located across the globe to identify potential major gift donors and assists them with developing tailored solicitation and stewardship strategies based on the research completed. The PRV team works closely with the Economic Justice & Rights Director to ensure that there are no reputational risks and/or Programmatic conflicts when cultivating prospects and accepting gifts.

This position can be based out of the following HRW offices: Brussels, London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Amsterdam.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with in-depth research on individual and foundation prospects using various online tools, such as Wealth-X, DonorSerach, RelSci and Lexis-Nexis, to inform donor solicitation strategies;
  2. Draft prospect profiles and reports based on the information collected;
  3. Assist in logging relevant information in Salesforce, HRW’s Customer relationship management system;
  4. Assist the Economic Justice & Rights Program with vetting requests from frontline fundraisers to ensure potential donors do not represent a conflict with HRW’s solicitation policy;
  5. Coordinate Prospect Research trainings for Development and Outreach colleagues worldwide;
  6. Collaborate with staff across departments to complete prospect research projects;
  7. Responsible for ensuring Data Compliance is maintained for the PRV Team within EU Regulations such as General Data Protection regulations and PRV activities in relation to EU Data;
  8. Proactively stay apprised of news and updates as they relate to HRW’s core constituency and to the philanthropic community more broadly; and
  9. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge: 

  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail is required.
  2. English and French or German fluency is highly desired.
  3. Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
  4. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential.
  6. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are necessary.
  7. Familiarity and experience working with prospecting tools required.
  8. Database experience is strongly preferred.
  9. Strong interest in human rights is desirable.
  10. Knowledge of Data Protection regulations is desirable.
