College of Biomedical and Life SciencesWe have an exciting opportunity to join the Core Bioinformatics Team at Cardiff University. This School of Medicine post will be aligned with the Wales Gene Park, Division of Infection and Immunity and Central Biotechnology Services (CBS) and is based at the Heath Park Campus. We are looking for someone who is experienced in working with data platforms commonly used in bioinformatics, including omics. The successful candidate will be required to support local and external researchers accessing bioinformatics services, support and training. They will join a small team of bioinformaticians and will benefit from peer interactions and access to established analysis workflows, training and national informatics networks.Candidates should be educated to degree level in bioinformatics, (or a closely related analytical subject) or with an equivalent level of experience evidenced by significant relevant outputs.For further information, candidates should contact Dr Robert Andrews ( ).This post is a full time (35 hours per week), fixed term until 14th November 2025 and is available immediately.Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 per annum (Grade 6). - Actively contribute to the overall research performance, skilling, training, innovation and engagement activities of the College and inspire others to do the same
- Provide professional advice and guidance in bioinformatics to internal and external researchers that will have nationwide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
- Take responsibility for resolving issues independently where they fall within set role objectives
- Take responsibility for the delivery of critical bioinformatics inputs on a range of research projects in the College and academic partners in Wales, evidenced by the production of measurable outputs, including key inputs into grant applications, publishing in leading academic journals and contributing to postgraduate research
- Independently contribute to training development in BIoinformatics
- Be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering a range of bioinformatics training options for staff and PhD students to enable colleagues to better engage with their data, use specialised software and develop core bioinformatics skills
- Ensure that the provision of bioinformatics services is delivered to stakeholders, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements
- Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
- Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
- Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the project team
- Instruct and guide other employees across the University and external partners in bioinformatics
- Develop and maintain research and teaching networks through regularly attending national and international conferences and participating in relevant local meetings and seminars
- Be closely involved in the drafting of research manuscripts for publication and to take a leading role on data analysis and data management aspects
- Develop approaches that enable the efficient processing, analysis, storage, backup and access of data. You will use commercial software and your own pipelines to normalise and analyse data and achieve publication quality data to enable biologically relevant conclusions to be made
- Contribute to the strategic development of bioinformatics and genomics and initiatives within the College
