POSITION:                 COURT RECORDING MONITOR/TRANSCRIPTIONIST

                                    Full-Time, 80 hours/pay

$15.89 starting rate *plus additional unlimited earning potential via transcription output. *

 

OVERALL OBJECTIVE:

Through the use of an electronic recording system, records all spoken words during court proceedings including but not limited to testimony, opening and closing remarks of counsel, remarks of a judge, and sidebar conferences. May prepare a transcript from the verbatim recording.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports to the District Court Administrator.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintains recording equipment; conducts checks of system on a daily basis to ensure proper functioning.
  2. Maintains records, recordings, and log sheets.
  3. Maintains and secures exhibits; ensures that adequate supplies are maintained.
  4. Records testimony at all types of court proceedings including trials, hearings, and conferences using an electronic recording system; interrupts when necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness of record; plays back portions of proceedings if requested.
  5. Maintains a log of all speakers and events noting all occurrences such as unusual terms, names, objections, and cross-examinations.  Determines correct spelling of names, terminology and other specifics of testimony.
  6. Processes transcript requests and makes copies of log notes and recordings as directed; transcribes recordings only as directed.  Provides records to other transcribers as directed and answers transcribers’ inquiries.
  7. Maintains record of transcripts status; bills appropriate parties; delivers transcripts to judge, attorneys and other designated personnel as directed.
  8. Follows protocol as directed, and performs other job-related duties as assigned.

     

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Must have extraordinary typing skills and the ability to transcribe with speed and accuracy.
  2. Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and usage.
  3. Ability to communicate with members of the judiciary, attorneys, associates, and others as required.
  4. Basic knowledge of courtroom and legal proceeding.
  5. Basic knowledge of legal terminology and functions of various court officials.
  6. Ability to learn the use of electronic recording equipment to enable production of verbatim transcripts of legal proceedings involving multiple speakers, specialized testimony, and emotional circumstances.

     

  7. Ability to learn to diagnose and correct routine malfunctions of electronic recording devices.

  8. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions.
  9. Ability to organize and maintain complete record of activities.
  10. Must have excellent oral and written communications.
  11. Ability to work independently and effectively with co-workers and others.
  12. Must possess the ability to accurately transcribe recording and proceedings within required timeframes.
  13. Must possess excellent time management skills.

     

QUALIFICATIONS

A.        EDUCATION/TRAINING

High School diploma or equivalent. Paralegal degree/certificate preferred.

B.        WORK EXPERIENCE

Three to five years’ clerical experience in an administrative, professional, governmental or judicial setting in order to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required.

C.        CLEARANCE

Must not appear on Preclusion Lists as defined by “Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance Bulletin 99-11-05 Provider Screening of Employees and Contractors for Exclusion from Participating in Federal Healthcare Programs.”

D.        DRUG SCREENING

            Must uccessfully complete pre-employment drug screening.
