Cryo-EM Facilities ManagerThe UK Structural & Biophysical Sciences group is a global multi-disciplinary department within GSK R&D that provides molecular insights into drug discovery for small molecule, oligonucleotide, biopharmaceutical and vaccine programs.This role is an excellent opportunity for a team-oriented individual who is keen to apply their skills in managing a highly productive cryo-EM facility. As a key member of a team of over a dozen accomplished structural biologists, you will hold the crucial responsibility of operating and maintaining three state-of-the-art cryo-EM microscopes. Your role will encompass troubleshooting, calibration, and regular upkeep to ensure optimal performance.In this pivotal role in drug discovery, you will collaborate with researchers both within and outside the department, leveraging cryo-EM to directly impact the advancement of medicines. You will also have the unique opportunity to share your expertise, guiding and nurturing a team of passionate individuals in the use of cryo-EM technology.Staying abreast of the latest developments in cryo-EM technology is vital, ensuring that our team and facility remain at the forefront of the field. If you have an aptitude and knowledge of related topics of data processing, computational infrastructure, sample preparation, cryo-ET, or knowledge of other structural methods, we would be eager to leverage and maximise your potential within the department.In this role you will:

  • Oversee and operate three state-of-the-art cryo-EM microscopes, ensuring their optimal performance. This includes troubleshooting, calibration, regular upkeep, and knowledge of relevant site facilities.
  • Foster collaborative environment that encourages innovation and high productivity in application of cryo-EM in drug discovery.
  • Help design future cryo-EM infrastructure strategy and evolve efficient ways of working.
  • Establish strong and productive relationships with manufacturers to ensure the best support and updates for the equipment.
  • Ensure awareness of developments in cryo-EM to maintaining the department at the forefront of field.
  • Adherence to the highest standards of quality and safety.

Why you?Basic Qualifications & Skills:We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • A background in a biological, biochemical or physical sciences discipline, with at least PhD level or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience with operation of screening and high-resolution data-collection microscopes.
  • Knowledge of all stages of single particle cryo-EM process from protein purification to grid optimisation, data-processing, 3-D reconstruction and structure interpretation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and team working skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:

  • Postdoctoral/industrial experience in structural biology.
  • Examples of training scientists in one or more areas of the cryo-EM process.
  • Experience of integration of microscope data into HPC ecosystems.
  • Experience with imaging broad range of samples e.g. soluble and membrane proteins, small proteins

100kDa, LNP, etc. * Experience with cryo-ET.

  • Experience of maintaining microscopes and interacting with external support/ engineers.
