• An academic background in Political Science or related area;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• A completed Master’s degree;
• Scholarly approach to teaching academic writing, familiarity with best practices, and demonstrated commitment to professional development around teaching writing;
• Minimum two years experience teaching and leading workshops in academic writing at college or university level;
• Experience tutoring writing one-on-one in a writing centre context, and familiarity with best practices in one-to-one writing instruction;
• Experience working with a culturally and linguistically diverse student population;
• Experience developing tailored instructional materials and delivering tailored instructional sessions;
• Experience collaborating and working effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience as a writing instructor in CTL Embedded Writing Instruction program in Political Science;
• Experience leading teaching workshops for Teaching Assistants or course instructors;
• A completed PhD or PhD coursework;
• An awareness of recent developments and issues in the field of writing studies, in particular familiarity with scholarly literature around pedagogies of care, decolonial and/or anti-racist approaches to writing instruction;
• Training in second-language instruction at the university level;
• Proficiency with platforms used regularly at UTSC for online learning (WC Online, Quercus, Zoom and Teams).

The University of Toronto Scarborough Writing Support Program favours applicants with a long-term commitment to writing centre teaching.Description of duties:The Lead Writing Instructor for Political Science will be a key member of the teaching team for two first-year Political Science courses: POLA01 and POLA02: Critical Issues in Politics I and II. In these courses, TAs support the development of student writing skills through writing activities and lessons in tutorials. The Lead Writing Instructor will collaborate with the course instructors and Lead Writing TA to finalize the writing curriculum for each course, then develop and lead weekly workshops and discussions on teaching key components of writing in Political Science, as well as benchmarking sessions for grading students writing. The Lead Writing Instructor will also collaborate with other embedded writing instructor(s) to offer one-to-one tutoring and themed writing office hours, and to develop other instruction and materials for students as needed. Finally, they will participate in assessment activities and collaborate with writing support coordinators, course instructors and/or course TAs to write interim or final reports.Writing instruction will be delivered both online and in person. For Fall 2024-Winter 2025, we anticipate that most meetings and one-to-one instruction will be remote, using WC Online and possibly other platforms such as Quercus, Zoom, or Teams, but instructors may be asked to offer a limited number of hours of in-person instruction. Pedagogical materials may be text- or video-based.
