  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • A completed Master’s degree;
  • In-person and online experience teaching or tutoring university-level academic writing one-on-one;
  • Experience with writing across the full range of disciplines taught at the University of Toronto Scarborough (including Humanities, Social Sciences, Management, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Psychology, Life Sciences, and Physical and Environmental Sciences);
  • Experience working with a diverse group of students;
  • A scholarly approach to one-to-one writing instruction, including familiarity with best practices;
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Proficiency with platforms used regularly at UTSC for online learning (WCOnline, Zoom and Teams).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A completed PhD or PhD coursework;
  • Awareness of recent developments and issues in the field of writing studies, in particular familiarity with scholarly literature around pedagogies of care, and decolonial and/or anti-racist approaches to writing instruction;
  • Training in second-language instruction at the university level;
  • An academic background in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, or Social Sciences.

CTL’s Writing Support program at the University of Toronto Scarborough favours applicants with a long-term commitment to writing centre teaching. We also encourage applications from individuals who identify as Black or Indigenous.Relevant Criterion:Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.Description of duties:Writing instructors teach critical analysis, critical reading, modes of argument, research skills, and methods for reading, planning, drafting and revising texts. The chief duty of instructors in CTL Writing Support is to provide one-to-one instruction to students in all disciplines and at all levels of language proficiency. Writing instructors may also be asked to respond to student questions, facilitate course-based writing retreats, facilitate small groups of students in discussing and reviewing writing, develop pedagogical materials, collaborate with discipline-based instructors to develop and teach tailored workshops on aspects of academic writing, and support other Writing Support programming.For Fall 2024-Winter 2025, writing instruction will be offered both in-person and online using WC Online. Instructors should be prepared to come to campus for in-person hours a minimum of one day per week.
