We are looking for a Design Manager for our client to work on a Nuclear project on a contract basis. This will run through to the end of the year but likely to be longer.
The work can be based in London for 3 days per week with hybrid wokring.The role will involve
- Definition of the design, engineering, and technical requirements
- Leadership of the delivery of all CWP design (from requirements definition to acceptance), including management of the Engineering & Technical budget and associated resources and supply chain to deliver the design to the CWP Delivery teams.
- Integration of constructability requirements and design integration within the Civil Works Programme and with Site Establishment and Offsite Infrastructure
The Design Manager will be part of the Engineering & Technical function within the Civil Works Programme and responsible for the technical aspects of the end-to-end design process in their specific scope area. The Design Manager will manage and co-ordinate the SZC Client and Responsible Designer inputs and requirements, manage technical change control, manage the technical assurance process to ensure delivery to quality and co-ordinate technical aspects with technical stakeholders, including EDF Nuclear Services Engineering (was PWRT TCO), SZC Design Authority, RD and L3 Design Supply Chain.
- Define or validate the SZC Technical Requirements and Specification, including engagement with EDF Nuclear Services and SZC Design Authority to support approval.
- Manage technical Open Points and Design Changes and ensure they are progressed in a timely manner to support design delivery co-ordinating RD, EDF Nuclear Services Engineering, technical stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts engagement. Working in collaboration with SZC Engineering Integration and other parties to maintain configuration control. This includes progression through the technical governance processes including Replication Principles, Technical Direction Forum (TDF), No Change Committee (NCC) and Non-Permanent Works Change Committee (NPWCC).
- Support the relevant stakeholders (e.g. RD and EDF Nuclear Services – Engineering) in their delivery of the Design Technical Assurance (including Digital Assurance) for the end-to-end design and ensuring SZC acceptance can be provided, including reviews and approvals as defined by the surveillance plans.
- Responsible for ensuring that all Design Deliverables are fully co-ordinated, including within a 3D environment with assurance for deliverables.
- Manage technical risks through Risk Management Processes and co-ordination with the Engineering & Technical Project Manager for cost and Schedule Impact.
- Responsible for ensuring technical aspects are shared with the Engineering & Technical Project Manager to support their reporting requirements.
- Support the Engineering & Technical Project Manager in technical input for Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, General Communications etc from L3 Design Supply Chain, including engagement with relevant SZC and RD technical stakeholders.
- Manage the integration of the CWA Main Method Statements or Construction Input into the L3 Design Supply Chain Design Requirements.
- Co-ordinate, where applicable, technical interfaces with other parties, for example Site Establishment and Off-Site Infrastructure NI Programme CIBOP Programme and Sizewell B.
- Ensure that the SZC Engineering and Design processes, e,g, Design Management Plans, are developed and complied with to deliver the whole lifecycle of the Design, from Technical Requirement capture to EDR.
- Ensure that Designers are undertaking their duties under CDM and engage with SZC CDM-Advisers to support CDM compliance.
The Engineering & Technical function includes several technical areas. The purpose of this role is to lead on the technical aspects within one of the following scope areas:
- Enabling Works
- Earthworks
- Marine & Tunnelling
- Nuclear Island
- CI-BOP-Heat Sink
- Ancillary Works (Permanent Roads & Networks and Ancillary Buildings)
Essential
- Established and practical skill and experience across concept design, detailed design and construction stages, including management of design phases, in:
o heavy civil engineering structures, including reinforced concrete and structural steel, and familiarity with current design standards and working practices (e.g. British Standards) and/or
o ground engineering, including earthworks, drainage, pavements, slopes & retaining structures, foundations and construction logistics.
o external works, including drainage, utilities, paved and unpaved surfaces, earthworks, access and accessibility, construction logistics
o familiarity with current UK design standards and working practices
o managing complex multi-disciplinary designs and teams, including integration, design and delivery management.
- Experience in, and a desire to provide, technical leadership and collaboration within a technically orientated delivery team
- Experience of working with, and leading technically, focused technical teams including technical direction of suppliers
- Experience of working on multi-discipline projects
- Proven experience effectively managing stakeholders, both internal and external, both technically and commercially
- Ability to communicate and engage effectively at a range of levels: Management Team, SZC stakeholders, design delivery teams, Design Authority, Regulators etc
Desirable
- Experience in the nuclear sector, particularly in the design and implementation of safety-related structures, systems and components
- Higher degree (MSc, MEng or PhD) in Ground Engineering / Geotechnics
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Honours Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent
- Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE) or working towards chartership
Desirable
- Experience in the technical leadership of design of large and complex projects such as nuclear projects (e.g. Hinkley Point C)
