Developing clinical guidelines and interventions to improving primary healthcare for patients with non-communicable diseases during severe flooding in India

University of Birmingham

About the Project

Applications are invited for a 3.5-year fully-funded PhD Studentship

Severe floods are an increasing annual problem in parts of India and South Asia, worsened by global warming. Medical responses to floods traditionally have yet to include NCD services in India and many low and middle-income countries. Patients, and HCPs are found to need more structured plans. Our 5 year NIHR-funded project in Kerala and Bihar aims to develop and evaluate in a cluster randomised controlled trial (cluster-RCT) a model of health service and community preparedness and response that would improve the care for and outcomes of patients with NCDs affected by floods. Health and implementation outcomes are measured and a component with climate specialists will develop predictive models for flooding advanced warning systems.

Therefore, this PhD candidate based in Kerala, India, will assist in developing the tools for the intervention for the health care system and communities in India. The candidate will need to be an Indian national and live in Kerala, India for the duration of the project. They will visit the UK for supervision, University of Birmingham and NIHR courses.

This 5 year £3mil NHR project is a collaboration between the UOB, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum in Kerala, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Mahavir Cancer Research Centre in Bihar, and Doctors for You NGO.
