Developing novel strategies to protect the coronary microcirculation in the presence of co-morbidities

About the Project

We are seeking talented, motivated students with a passion for research in cardiovascular diseases to apply for a 3-year PhD studentship. Specifically, we are interested in developing novel strategies that can protect the coronary microcirculation after a heart attack / myocardial infarction. Our research focuses on imaging the tiny blood vessels of the beating heart in experimental models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury in the presence of co-morbidities (e.g. ageing, diabetes, chronic kidney disease etc.). To do this, we use state-of-the-art imaging equipment including intravital, multiphoton and laser speckle microscopy to assess multiple vascular perturbations. The student will be fully trained in these techniques but will also have ample opportunity to gain experience in a plethora of other more routine laboratory methods (cell and tissue culture, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, histology etc). The research is led by Dr Neena Kalia, an experienced postgraduate supervisor / mentor. She heads the Microcirculation Research Group and is Director of Intravital Imaging. Her group aims to answer translationally relevant questions. This studentship offers an opportunity to study in an excellent research environment, in a research institute with world class facilities and resources devoted to understanding the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and driving new translational therapies for patients. We have opportunities available for exceptional candidates with knowledge, experience or an interest in cardiovascular diseases, thrombo-inflammation, vascular biology, ageing, diabetes, kidney diseases or in vivo models.
