Background
The global ECT WASH project, implemented by Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund e.V. (ASB), arche noVa (AN) and the German Toilet Organization e.V. (GTO), runs from November 2023 to October 2026 across 14 countries. It aims to ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation, promote inclusive and climate-sensitive WASH approaches, and enhance disaster preparedness. Key focuses include:
- Ensure safe and universal access to climate-sensitive humanitarian WASH services that are adapted to the local context
- Strengthened local disaster preparedness and response capacities
- Partners and stakeholders in the project countries are familiar with the Climate Charter and the Green Humanitarian Aid Approach.
- Authorities and civil society disaster management institutions have the technical knowledge and good practice examples in the field of climate-sensitive and green humanitarian aid.
GTO handles capacity building, knowledge management, and advocacy, focusing on environmental mainstreaming and climate resilience.
Scope of Work
The main purpose of the work being tendered for is to support a strategical way of capacity building for environmental mainstreaming for ASB and AN Country Teams as well as their local/ national partners (meaning NGOs and CSOs). For that purpose, separated working packages shall be developed as part of the assignment
Working Package 1: Modular ToT for Environmental Mainstreaming
A Modular Training of Trainers (ToT) package, including content and methodology with the target to foster learning through local multipliers for purpose driven capacity building, shall be conceptualized and developed. In each project country selected staff members will participate in such a ToT and receive the training package to be fully capacitated to conduct locally adopted basic Environmental and Climate Mainstreaming trainings in each country.
Working Package 2: Process guide for climate sensitive and environmentally sound humanitarian operations
As part of the ECT WASH project, an easy to understand and practical guidance document for the actors involved in the project shall be developed. The guide outlines approaches and process on the transformation towards climate sensitive and environmentally sound WASH in humanitarian operations, with a focus on community and local stakeholder participation.
The document shall provide a methodological framework and inspiration for mainstreaming environmental and climate aspects in humanitarian operations, as well as practical examples and references for environmental sound and climate-sensitive WASH practices.
Optional Working Package 3: Testing the modular Training
This package will be agreed on during the contract duration and will take place in 2025. The training developed will be tested in 5-days-in-person training and evaluated by the consultant afterwards.

Required Qualifications
- At least 10 years work experiences in the field of humanitarian aid and or development on topics WASH, Climate Change or similar
- At least 5 years’ experience in conceptualizing, editing and designing training modules for humanitarian or development technical audiences (e.g., guidance, studies, knowledge platforms)
- Academical professional background in Environmental Science and Technology, Climatology, Water and Sanitation infrastructure and/or humanitarian operations
- Excellent knowledge of adult learning theory
- Excellent network within the humanitarian WASH sector
- Ability to follow creative briefs, to work in agile teams and to work within tight deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written English
- Proof of professional registration and taxation
