Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Campaigns and Country Operations Division in the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The incumbent will report to a Public Information Officer (Kiswahili) in the Social Media Section. The Section is responsible for devising, implementing, and managing the multilingual social media strategy of the department, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging and as guided by administrative policies on the institutional use of social media.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products, including editing and promotion of platform-optimized social media assets. • Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic, social media content for target audiences; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of social media communications products/services across United Nations social media platforms for external audiences. • Organizes and executes special events and social media activations; coordinating with diverse partners to highlight and publicize key events and campaigns. • Handles administrative coordination in support of social media focused special training and guidance. • Oversees the distribution of social media materials; ensures the good management of social media content, and the proper safekeeping/preservation of historical any relevant social media materials. • Serves as a social media content coordinator by overseeing the day-to-day content activities and working closely with the social media team lead to ensure successful branding techniques; undertakes proactive initiatives to build a social media partner base and nurture relationships; produces a wide range of promotional social media products; and develops data insight collection mechanisms to gather data/insights on the audience and end-users of UN social media accounts. • Assists in the production and editing of social media projects: researches diverse information sources for topics and materials for projects; suggests ideas on content, design elements, etc.; selects and catalogues visual materials and evaluates quality for inclusion in social media products and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights. • Identifies and selects appropriate and relevant excerpts of speeches and statements for use on social media platforms including language adaptations; coordinates translation/adaptation as needed of scripts, and supports the preparation of electronic titles and graphics, etc. Assists in the daily management of the United Nations social media presence; prepares, maintains and updates social media accounts including drafting and editing content. • Identifies and prepares new social media material for inclusion on appropriate social media accounts by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required; identifying, retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information; editing documents to conform to UN social media format, structure and style and preparing new social media posts, incorporating graphics as needed; preparing and updating index of documents; posting documents on the UN the social media team information sharing platforms. • Manages updates and further develops internal databases and editorial tools; generates a variety of standard social media insight statistics and other related reports from various social media platforms. • Provides guidance and training to junior staff. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience providing specialized assistance in the production, editing and promotion of platform-optimized social media assets in Kiswahili is required. Experience assisting in the daily management of a global social media presence, including drafting and editing content in Kiswahili is required. Experience researching a broad scope of social media content for target audiences in an international setting is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Kiswahili is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
