About MSF Eastern Africa
MSF Eastern Africa is the regional institutional office of MSF. It focuses on representation and networking, recruiting and supporting staff from the region, communications and fundraising, as well as working on other dossiers of importance to MSF such as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Data Protection, mutualization, training, medical operational support and environmental health.
Rationale/Objective for Position
The Digital Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the online communications strategy of MSF EA, working closely with the Head of Communications and Operational Support.
The jobholder is also responsible for supporting MSF EA’s home society communications objectives, as well as the broader MSF movement´s social mission, with a strong focus on the EA region.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Strategic Responsibilities
- Develop and implement digital strategies, liaising with colleagues across the continent and throughout MSF to coordinate and strengthen MSF´s wider digital communications efforts.
- Develop and oversee the implementation of specific digital marketing strategies to support the office´s broad agenda and continually improve campaigns dependent on their performance.
- Advice and support other MSF EA departments in creating specific online strategies and content to reach their target audiences and achieve their objectives such as the HR team and the region´s association.
Technical and Operational Responsibilities
Digital
- Develop and oversee implementation of evolving digital and social media plans, including devising content strategy, creating engaging materials, events, and campaigns for different channels.
- Develop and oversee implementation of ideas and opportunities for reaching new online audiences and increasing online followers / visitors and engagement.
- Promote innovation in MSF’s digital communication approach, following digital innovations and social media evolution and trends, taking special consideration of the specificities of the East African context and those of the various channels we manage.
- Monitor online conversations and trending topics to advice on issues of interest and effective social media messages, and to identify possible risks and opportunities, including creating relationships with key online influencers.
- Act as the point of reference for digital excellence in the region, as well as in the team, on all aspects of digital communications.
- With the Digital Marketing Officer, explore search engine optimization strategies (including through external advisors) and help to implement them.
Publication and dissemination of online contents
- Ensure timely the dissemination of content on MSF EA digital channels by the digital content and digital marketing officers.
- Produce or adapt specific online content aimed at Kenyan and East African audiences in line with MSF´s editorial, style and communication guidelines and following established validation procedures.
- Oversee creation of engaging content for EA channels by the content officer.
- Establish regular contact with operational communications colleagues in Kenya and East Africa missions, for information, responses and to produce content to be featured in the social media channels.
- Oversee the production and dissemination of digital communications to external audiences.
- Help to strategize and organize regular digital events, in collaboration with the wider team.
Representation
- Represent MSF EA in international platforms (such as the digital working group), with communications colleagues in the region, and on external platforms as needed.
Monitoring and Analytics
- Ensure proper monitoring setup on key platforms to support reputation management and crisis support.
- Track, analyze and report on online metrics, providing insights and acting on the information to improve performance, impact and reach including contributing to regular reporting from the department to the Board and MT.
- Ensure the department maintains Google Analytics account for the website and other monitoring tools for social media.
Other Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the office´s communications and fundraising agenda.
- Working with the Head of Communications and Operational Support, contribute to keeping oversight of the digital expenditure for the department´s budget.
- Ensure that the digital products, including fundraising services, always uphold data confidentiality and security.
- Advise the Head of Communications and Operational Support on the upgrade strategy for the website and other platforms, including payment platforms, and oversee the process of upgrades as and when necessary, including taking oversight of the work and monitoring the deliverables of service providers.
- Support on payment developments, making it easier and more secure for potential donors in collaboration with the IT department and head of fundraising,
- Provide support during a crisis/emergency by monitoring social media, in collaboration with the Head of Communications and Operational Support.
- Take part in an on-call system to respond to media requests out of hours.
Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, New Media, Public Relations, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Knowledge of Drupal and HTML.
- Knowledge of web and social media metrics and analytics tools, including Google Analytics.
- Demonstrable knowledge of humanitarian work and commitment to its principles.
- Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of Swahili and a third language is an added advantage.
Experience
- At least five (5) years’ experience in digital media communications (both at a strategical and practical level), social media management and online community engagement.
- Experience in production, editing and coordination of web-based content.
- Experience in digital marketing, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Facebook Business Manager and Google AdWords / display.
- Experience in the development and implementation of online campaigns.
- Previous experience with MSF or other humanitarian NGOs is an added advantage.

What We Offer:
- An Open ended full-time employment contract through MSF East Africa Section Office in Nairobi, Kenya.
- An annual salary of EUR 27,105 at HQ Level 8 based on a full-time appointment.
- Global benefit package; includes school fee benefit/support for dependents and other allowances ranging between EUR 620 to 1,159/month based on individual & administrative status.
