The Director, ES&G Sustainability Advice & Solutions will work as part of IFC management to ensure effective environment and social risk management as well as support all aspects of IFC’s business strategy. Through effective risk management and opportunity identification, this role will ensure IFC can bring environment and social products and services to current and potential IFC clients.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership to CEG staff in fulfilling the department’s contributions to IFC’s goals and strategy – ensuring the effective delivery of ESG risk management advice and client solutions to a growing portfolio of increasingly complex projects. Lead CEG’s strategy formulation and execution across various products and solutions and partner with CES (Environmental & Social Policy & Risk) and the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) to develop IFC’s comprehensive approach to sustainability and environmental & social accountability. 
  • Provide leadership for efficient delivery of IFC’s annual investment and advisory program KPIs. 
  • Provide clear guidance and advice to staff in policy formulation, support investment transactions, coordinate and implement a comprehensive ESG advisory services program. 
  • Ensure the department discharges its risk management and assurance duties in a timely and responsible manner with regards to IFC’s compliance with the Sustainability Framework and the client’s ability to meet the requirements of IFC’s Performance Standards.
  • Maintain relevant and high-quality expertise amongst staff so that department is recognized as a center of excellence providing value to clients. 
  • Help maintain and promote IFC’s position as a leader in sustainable development. 
  • Build and maintain partnerships and relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external, to ensure clear strategy and process. 
  • Be a key spokesperson for IFC and the World Bank Group on sustainability issues, both at the client level and more broadly in other forums, such as conferences, institutional events. 

Selection Criteria:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in business administration, finance, or related fields and at least 15 years of work experience in a similar organization. 
  • Direct senior leadership experience in ESG/sustainability field, particularly in a private sector context, is strongly preferred.
  • Be committed to development and have a proven track record showing alignment with the World Bank Group and IFC’s mission, strategy, and values.
  • Demonstrated track record of sustained high quality service delivery and risk management in a growing business.
  • Demonstrated track record of cross selling products and strategies from multiple departments in a decentralized environment and in engaging potential donors to support IFC’s ESG advisory program. 
  • Demonstrate highest level of integrity and decisiveness, to take accountability as well as hold others accountable for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, develop innovative solutions and challenge the status quo to build IFC’s business. Demonstrated ability and willingness to make sound business decisions. 
  • Must be a role model with unquestionable integrity, strong work ethic, and commitment to diversity and IFC’s mission and values. 
  • Have the ability to represent IFC to key external clients, government authorities, other stakeholders, and critics.
  • Have excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills including the ability to present complex and technical issues in simple terms and ability to successfully engage senior decision-makers on complex technical and policy issues.
  • Deal with increased complexity, ambiguity and crisis with confidence and discretion.
  • Build organization capacity through system and process improvements; be a change agent and serve as a catalyst for innovation. 
  • Be willing to travel as and where necessary.
